Desert Combat -Sared - Jan 25 11:41am
I had the opportunity to interview Nexus, who, along with Mad Cow and a few others, are creating a Desert Combat-style mod for Jedi Academy.

Sared: So what can you tell us about the mod? Are you attempting the same sort of thing that was done in BF1942?

Nexus: That was where some of the inspiration came from yes. It all started off when madcow and I were screwing around with some models (they were almost all real world based) so i thought we should try to get a mod going. We have since pumped out a lot more models and got a mapper signed on.

Sared: Do you and madcow also texture all of your own models?

Nexus: So far yes but we have other people interested in doing it.

Sared: How about your mapper? Who is he and what kind of work has he done in the past?

Nexus: His name is Darth Zappa, known for maps such as Naboo Hills, BDC Racing Club, and Deathstar Trench.

Sared: What plans for SP/MP do you currently have for the mod?

Nexus: SP is unknown but MP plans included a total overhaul of the game. New maps, models, skins, we are even looking into changing animations and have really high hopes for what will come.

Sared: How about weapon behavior?

Nexus: We're hoping to change the damage and fire rate on all the weapons and make them reload instead of having hundreds of bullets from a bottomless clip.

Sared: Do you have a seperate coder working on that?

Nexus: We're still looking for a coder for that but I'm sure we will find one.

Sared: What about vehicles? are you planning on including land/air/water vehicles?

Nexus: Yes actually, we have finished quite a few of the air vehicles, and are starting to crank out some ground vehicles. so far we have an F-22, F-16, Stealth bomber, Apache helicopter, Blackhawk, Humvee, Tank and a Harrier jet. Most just need texturing now. I would like to do some water based vehicles aswell such as submarines and boats. We currently have an aircraft carrier done, but its not in-game yet.

Nexus: We also just started work on the new jetpack, based off of real-world designs.

Nexus: We should have a closed beta out by March so anyone who wants in should sign up on the site.

Sared: For anyone who is interested in helping with the mod, what areas do you still need help with, and how can they contact you?

Nexus: Well we could really use a coder, and another mapper would be nice. Other than that we have little things we could use help with like skinning weapons and vehicles. Anyone can contact us right now by emailing myself or Mad Cow. The mod is still in its infancy so any help would be nice.

If you think you would like to help out The Desert Warfare Team, feel free to give them to a shout-out. Their tenative site can be found at http://desertwarfare.hopto.org.

Very interesting. I'd have never thought of a realism combat mod for jedi academy. I wonder if they could find something to do with the saber system in this?

Well the Apache in that shot is a very early beta and has changed since then (mainly cause when it was first made the modeler was still new at that stuff).

Do I spy an L85A assault rifle? If so, you better do some research - most L85A's have non-zooming scopes. In fact, the only version with sights like that was the SA80 carbine, and only a handful were ever made. Even then, that sight-rail is way too long. For reference, check http://world.guns.ru/assault/as22-e.htm.

Looks good thus far, though. :D

Dac is right, you have the *option* to put payload on hardpoints on the wings if you chose.

no F22 do carry missles on wings now....u see earlier it was ONLY inside the belly...but NOW they carry on wings...tho when they carry missles on wings..they lose their STEALTH...but have more payload. However when they carry only in their belly they have low payload but they gain stealth...in an ALL out Close quaters dog fight...stealth doesnt matter...so they decided to also put missles on wings also...

tho u are correct..orginallly they were JUST in the BELLY...

That F-22 looks rather fishy. Raptors don't carry sidewinders on the wing, they have all weapons (excluding the machine gun) in an under-belly storage room, which opens when the pilot throws a bomb/fires a missile. Besides, Raptors have a pointy stick on the nose, presumably to stab mechanics who don't do their job well.

EDIT: Is that helicopter in the top screenshot an Apache?

^ Apache.... the one in that screenie looks more like a Cobra..
