Going Commando -Sared - Mar 09 01:54am
Don't ever eat pocky. You will love it. It is the natural human reaction to the substance. It is addictive, and you can never have enough of it. It is right on the border between cheap and expensive, depending on where you can find it.

Dear god, I need some pocky.

After being disappointed by Battlefront, Republic Commando came to me as a cool healing salve. The control, viewpoint, and intensity of it is in the range of games like Half-Life 2. Some of the smaller details, such as actually having Temuera Morrison giving his signature masculine voice to the squad, do not go unnoticed.

Going into this game, do not expect game play similar to Rainbow Six or other squad-based games, for the simple reason that your teammate's AI posses more intelligence than your garden-variety carrot. They don't get in your way, they shoot straight, and can assess targets appropriately. You may be the leader, but if you find yourself with the rest of your squad KO'ed, then you'll realise exactly how vulnerable you are. True enough to the advertisements, "The squad is your weapon."

Speaking of weapons, RC comes with an unique weapons system. You have your standard-issue pistol with unlimited ammo (handy in a pinch), your assault rifle, and a third slot for enemy weapon pickups. The assault rifle is what really makes or breaks your game. Alone, you can take down most enemies with ten rounds or so, but it when combined with your squad's covering fire, you can mow down anything in a quick burst. Additionally, you pick up attachments for the assault rifle, fitting it to work as a sniper rifle, or a grenade launcher. Enemy weapons vary according to species, but fit each faction well. A perfect example would be the Trandoshan weapons, designed as "Brutal, yet fundamentally deficient."

The research done to produce this game can only be appreciated when you watch all of the production videos included with the game. The RC animation team brought in Special Ops instructor Joe Bacciocco, a veteran with over thirty years of experience, to instruct them in weapon handling, squad movements, and team tactics.

On a geekier note, it is obvious that questions are going to arise about some continuity details, such as how to account for the difference in voice tone/accent between the squad members. Gabe of Penny-Arcade has written a short explanation to this.

It's important to understand that commandos are not the same as clone troopers. They have been bred for an entirely different job. Clone troopers are "programmed" to function either as a part of an army or alone. Commandos are built to function as a part of a four man squad. They are separated from the regular clone troopers and they receive special training. Jango Fett himself actually assembled a team of the best warriors in the galaxy to train the commandos. Each teacher is the best of the best in his or her field and by coming to Kamino to train the commandos they have given up any chance of ever returning to their previous lives. They are for all intents and purposes dead to the rest of the galaxy.

So each commando would have spent countless years training with an expert from some far flung corner of the galaxy. It makes sense that they would pick up the speech patterns and character traits of their teachers. They are built to absorb information at an in incredible rate. So each of the commandos is going to interact with different teachers and have different experiences during their training and all of that is going to change him in different ways. So there you go.

If at this point in time you have not played the Demo, then by all means, go get it here.

Mhh, yeah. Republic commando had a very very fun single player game. Some might consider it short but I think it was well worth the try. Download the demo if you guys want to give it a shot, nice theme song as well :P

I was dissapointed by both. However, battlefront was fun.

Galactic Battlegrounds has bad graphics, but it's fun. Compare the gameplay to Force Commander. FC had 2 civs, SWGB has 8 (if u get the CC expansion) plus many more things better about it. FC had its good parts to but I think it stinks.
