****WEEK 1 TERM 2****

Hello and welcome back to an exciting start of a new term for my class! With everyone being a bit more settled in, the class was able to kick off a little more quickly. The class was given the introductions to the course and then we went into our first lesson for the week, Half-Animations.

Before the students got into Half-Animations, they were taught 2 Basic Moves, the Basic Stance and the Basic Attack. Basic Stance is having your staff saber drawn and at the ready. From this position of holding still, once a student attacks while holding still, they perform the Basic Attack.

Half-Animations are adding on to the Basic Stance and Basic Attack. The Half-Animation is defined as pushing 1 of the 8 directions of movement plus clicking attack, one time only. The result is a short and quick swing to that direction and then the staffer returns to Basic Stance position. The 8 Directions of Movement are as follows:
Up+Attack, Once
UpRight+Attack, Once
Right+Attack, Once
DownRight+Attack, Once
Down+Attack, Once
DownLeft+Attack, Once
Left+Attack, Once
UpLeft+Attack, Once

The class got through the lesson with full success. When asked to review, each of the students followed the instructions perfectly. Great job everyone and great class. Next week is Full Animations.

Want to practice? Find one of your attending classmates.

Attendance:

As Janus stated, it was a great class! The opportunity to learn new skills (for free) from someone who is willing to dedicate his/her time is a benefit everyone should take advantage of. It was a shame only a few of us showed up. I was surprised as well. I do hope everyone will appreciate this attempt at establishing a structure for learning here at the academy. Though we all have obligations in real life, we should try to communicate with the teacher so that we minimize the surprises. Good luck to all and I hope to see more at these classes. :)

Well, yesterday was Final Exam for my First Term of my class. I can pretty much sum it up in one word, disappointed.

Why am I disappointed? Well get yourselves ready, I'm about to rant...

Here's the list who've attended over the past 7 weeks:
3th
Axio
Brian Snoozems
Brotherkow
Cerulean Blu
Crickelous
Damned
Delta(Passed)
Devlin
Feijao
Gradius
Jade Jedi
Kyo
MaceWindow Kenobi
Magby/Fencer
Masta
MateJ
Monkaiman
Nati
PizzaTheHut
Ploo Koon
Selph
Setementor
Sfire
Solitude
Tido
Tribal
Vanidar
Waternorth
Zertz

3th, Tido, Gradius, are Knights, they've got other obligations. They've come to the class, but aren't expected to go to the Final because they already KNOW the things I teach. Regardless, Gradius showed up yesterday and went through with it.

Cerulean Blu
Delta
Masta

Delta couldn't make Saturday, but we sought each other out during the week and he attempted to make it up and passed as well. Cerulean Blu and Masta were the only one's there, and they passed with flying colors. The rest of you on the list, what happened?

I specifically have posted early during the week to seek me out if you can't be there for the Final. I'd allow you to take it early. I gave all of you PLENTY of time to get a hold of me in any fashion possible. There's a few of you I expected to be there, but did not show.

I don't teach this class for my health folks. I SERIOUSLY want to get new staffers and experienced staffers the base knowledge they need to fight with the Staff honorably and without resorting to crappy tactics and cheap moves.

You know how hard it is to use the staff and be respected? Very! I'm teaching to make sure as a staffer, you know the essentials you need to know and start your way to becoming respected with the weapon you wield.

I got asked a question, and I'll leave the person nameless, they asked, "So, if we didn't show for the Final, did we fail?"

All I have to say is this. In real life, at college, univesity, an area where education is taught, and a Final Exam is assigned, if you don't show for the test, what usually happens?

Enough of my banter, next week starts the 2nd term of my class. We start right on back to Week 1 and learning the Basic Moves in Half Animations.

THIS IS A PERFECT TIME TO JUMP ONTO MY CLASS. YOU'LL BE STARTING WITH OTHERS WHO DECIDE TO JUMP IN FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

Congratulations to

Cerulean Blu
Delta
Gradius
Masta

For being the first to receive their

Today's class was a special 2 Hour edition. Tido had business to attend to and I was fortunate and lucky to snag the hour of his and my hour as well. Making up for last week, the entire class today was review of the past 6 weeks. We covered Half Animations, Full Animations, Basic Combos, Preanimated Movements, and finally, my Seven Sins of a Staffer. All of which if you read below I go into more detail of the matters when the class actually happened. Next week is the final exam.

For your Final Exam, students will be asked to do the following:

"Students will conclude their lesson of Janus Solid Staff Foundation Class by having a duel with Janus. The duel will transpire and the student will have to effectively show the use of at least 1 use of Half Animation, 1 use of Full Animation, 1 Basic Combo, and 1 Preanimated Movement during the duel. If Janus or the student were to win before the 4 areas are demonstrated, the student will receive a failure on the final exam."

Although this may sound harsh, I'm not going to jump all over the students expecting them to get everything off in a matter of seconds. I'm looking to see that you know and have retained the information. Good luck and seek these people that attended to practice with before next saturday!

The beginning of the final leg of our journey fellow staffers, and with it comes a bit of fun and a bit of learning. The basics to swinging the staff encompassed the first two weeks. The basics to using the staff enveloped the second two weeks. Now for these final two weeks of term, we take a step back and start to take a look at the Cons of staffing. Although they look cool, we turned our attention to Katas, The Janus Seven Deadly Sins of a Staffer + Extra Move(Thanks to Damned). Without further ado, the Sins...

Janus Sin #1: Hold Altfire(for me it's right click by default), and press Fire(left click for me).
Janus Sin #2: Hold Crouch, press up at the same time, combine it with Attack.
Janus Sin #3: Hold Up, Press Jump, Press Attack
Janus Sin #4: Hold Right, Press Jump, Press Attack
Janus Sin #5: Hold Left, Press Jump, Press Attack
Janus Sin #6: Basic Combo #2, but sway mouse left and right with each swing.
Janus Sin #7: Basic Combo #2, sway the mouse, but crouch.

In more details, the sins:
Sin 1: Stationary move where you spin your saber around yourself up around the head, the side, and finishing with a crouched slice. It's preanimated by Lucasarts so you have very little control over your body. If one knows the timing, you can get sliced in a few different spots. All in all, when dueling, don't use it, stick to the stuff that keeps you moving, keeps you animated, keeps you deadly.

Sin 2: Twirling in a narrow figure 8 around your left and right sides, you unleash a blade barrier which finishes with an around the head whirl. I have to emphasize that you are again stationary and can be hit with well timed place attacks.

Sin 3-5: Practically the same animation, but in different starting directions and different flips. Commonly called the "Butterflies", these at least keep you moving but end with you looking like a deer in headlights. These are so effective and used a lot in FFA's because in the midst of the spins and twirls and zigzags, the sabers trail is so awkward and irregular, you can do some serious damage if it connects through the body.

Sin 6 and 7: Basic Combo #2 has you swing with the keyboard left and right. As you go left, and sway your mouse left horizontally, and as you bounce back to the right and sway your mouse right, your character model begins to advance forward, without pressing forward. From experience in a couple clans, they teach staffers to use and take advantage of these moves. They are extremely tough to counter, but it can be done. Whereas you stand in #6, #7 you crouch, and sure enough, it's 6's counter. Crouching while doing it takes care of someone standing up doing it. How do you counter #7? Jump over them and make them stand up. You take your attack on the standing readjusting opponent.

Why go over these and teach these moves if you don't support them Janus?

I get asked this question quite a bit. I fight in a certain style based on cheesefactor. I don't support the cheese moves and believe in an honorable fight. Unfortunately outside the JA walls, most will use and take anything to win in a fight. These are all of course opinions, but I've seen a lot in my year in this game. BUT, this is basic staffing for a class, and I feel everyone needs to know ALL the moves, good or bad.

The move that I can put anywhere else.
Jumping Up Spinarooni: (yes, that's a technical term)

Down+Jump+Attack. The player will leap super high backwards up and down while doing a helicopter spin. The Helicopter is upside down though. Useful factor as a staffer, not very. If you hit someone in mid-air, which is like 1% chance you'll hit them, it'll do some heavy damage.

Hidden sneaky move: Once you land from the upside down helicopter, keep holding attack down. It's a REAL slow horizontal swing, kind of like a red single stance attack. This will hurt an opponent not suspecting an attack after the flip.

That's all she wrote in terms of classtime. Next week we'll review the sins and start into Advanced Moves.

Class Attendance:
Damned
Tribal
Tido
Cerulean Blu
Delta

The end of our 2nd term was today. The class did a great job as we went over last week's Basic Combos and introduced ourselves to Preanimated Movements.

Preanimated Movements are done by holding attack down and combining two directions one after another on the keyboard. There are only several preanimated movements, these are the keypresses.

Start with a vertical slice, then you spin around to your left with a horizontal slice:
Up, Right
Down, Right
Hold Still, Right
Up+Right, Right

Slice diagonally up and to your right, catch the saber and spin it horizontally around your waise:
Down+Right, Right

Slice diagonally up and to your left, and then proceed to spin yourself around holding the saber above your head helicopter style before finishing with a slash to your left, but arced down:
Down+Left, Up+Left
Left, Up+Left

I have to repeat and say great class to all. Next week, we start the Janus Seven Deadly Sins of a Staffer. If you need extra help, seek me, or anyone else on the attendance list below.

Well, in this world, there is a thing called chaos, and chaos hit home for this weeks class. Everyone was having trouble joining classes server, including myself. Apparently it was down and I had no idea :). SOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo we made our way to our all familiar JA Home and had class. Unfortunately it ate up some class time, but that's ok, we still had a very nice class.

What we went over today:
Basic Combos, 1, 2, and 3.
Basic Combo 1 = Hold down the Up or Forward Key and Alternate between Right and Left. Timing is of the essence here so the alternating is smooth and flows right. This combines up+right and up+left attacks demonstrated from the previous 2 weeks.
Basic Combo 2 = Left and Right, back and forth you go. Timing is important here because if you don't time it right, you'll continue one of the animations and it could leave you open unexpectedly. Left and Right Half Animations from the previous two weeks are used to make this combo.
Basic Combo 3 - Hold down the Down key or Backward and alternate Left and Right. Combining the knowledge of Down+Right and Down+Left Half Animations, you'll make this combo. The timing is slightly slower than Combo 1's.

End of the 2nd week, and the class saw an interesting turn of events so to speak...

We took the early part of the class to review the Half Staff Animations and teach it new to those that hadn't been there last week. After that warm-up, the class was introduced to the Full Staff Animations. These are performed by instead of clicking attack once + direction on the keyboard, you click and HOLD attack down with the direction and the staffer repeats the swing animation, with a "filler" animation in between. The class grasped it quite easily and did an excellent job of displaying it. The last 15 minutes of class were a surprise though for these young padawans as they experienced Pop Quiz, Janus Style. Their Pop Quiz: Duel your opponent using ONLY the Half and Full Animations taught in the class these past 2 weeks. That means, NO combos, NO katas, NO preanimated movements. I managed to duel a few and they did a great job illustrating the concept. Those that I didn't duel, I watched and they did a great job with it. Congrats class, you've made it through the first 2 weeks. Now it's time to take the training wheels off and dig into it next week with Basic Combos and Pre-Animated Moves.

_______________
Be honorable, be friendly, be trustworthy. Show respect to all whom you meet. Don't forget you learn when you win AND when you lose. Be the first to admit mistake AND the first to correct it. Be the shoulder for someone to lean on. Always remember those that sacrificed time to help you. Thank you Odan Wei, Vladarion, 3th, Moridin, n00b, Motrec, Faded, Leif, and Tido, you will not be forgotten as the ones to make you remember, it's all about fun...
