well to make a skin first you need a modeling program, or you could try and find a model that is similar to the one you want to make and just mod the skins, although you could probably get away with using the desann model from the game.:D

thanks dude:D

there is nothing about mapping in the holocron! maybe someone (eg me lol) should put something in there cos there is not much in programming or skins and no mention of mapping... i could do the basics like water and lights etc and someone else could do the more advanced stuff like entities and switchs and teleports cos im not amazing with them...

It'll be done using a target_print entity. Create one and press n. It should be pretty clear how you use it after that. Just use "message" as the key and whatever message you want to appear as the value, then make a trigger_multiple, put it next to the switch and link it to the target_print. When a player moves into the trigger, it'll display the text to them.

Oh, it should be obvious, but be sure to check the "private" checkbox so it only goes to the person who walks into the trigger. I doubt you'd want it to be a public message. :D

I'm looking for a way to add text to a switch or something, like when you get near it, it displays some text. I'd like to use this to know which switch is for what. I saw that already in another map and wondered how it's done.

Hmm, that's weird. I can't find that texture anywhere. It isn't in the taspir texture set or the assets files for me. Sometimes custom maps add some textures to texture sets. But oh well, nevermind.

Errm not really. It was in gtk radiant in the taspir set. Anyways thanks a bunch. (again) :)

The only complete lava texture I was able to find in the assets was imp_mine/lava2.jpg. Is the one you are using a custom texture? If so, that would really explain it.

Now I'm trying to make lava. Well it works but the textures don't seem to work. I tryed flaval but that didn't seem to work. The game just didn't recognise them. Is there another texture or should this one work?

I believe that 1.5 has a completely new texture system.

I've installed the new radiant (1.5) and all the textures seem to be there lol.

I've never looked at that stuff very much before, but my guess would be that it loads the name of textures by the name of shader entries that are using them, and if there is texture that a shader doesn't use, it uses a default one and loads normally with its original name. That theory is probably really screwed up. I'll experiment a bit though. :D

Oh, and yeah, it is normal in radiant.

Ah thanks, that fixed it. :)

I extracted the textures folder from assets3.pk3, and as I looked trough the textures I saw, that there are lots of textures that don't appear in gtkradiant when I load them. For example in textures\yavin there's a texture named stone_walk, when I load Yavin textures in gtkradiant I only get a stone_walk_vertex texture. Is that normal in radiant?

They look like two different brushes. Try making all of that water just one brush. :)

Oh, you could also try selecting both of the brushes together and giving them the system/caulk_water texture, then selecting only the top sides of the two brushes together and giving them the original water texture you used.

It depends how you like your map really, whether you want it to be really light, fairly light or even dark. In a map that size, if you don't care how lit up the map will be, you could just increase the amount of light produced, or just place more lights like those if you don't want it TOO bright. Lights can take some experimenting.

Some maps seem to need to have thousands of very small lights all over it to make it look right. But I doubt many people enjoy doing that kind of stuff. :P

The lights work now, but they seem a bit weak to me. I placed about 4 or 5 lights over the map, then I added the keys scale 2 and light 4000 but the map was still too darko. My room is 2560x2560x1024. :P What kind of settings would be optimal for the lights?

Did you compile your map with the test option? Make sure you are compiling with the -light BSP option. If you compile your map using the "Q2Map2: (test) BSP -meta, -vis, -light -fast -filter" options, you shouldn't have that problem. If you still do, try using the brush cleanup plugin tool (Plugins > bobtoolz > Brush Cleanup) Sometimes it can be a buggy brush that causes problems like this. I had one a while back that was giving me an error, and it turned out to be a very, very small and seriously thin brush that also fully lighted my map. It was so thin I had to dig through all of my brushes and delete them one by one to find it.
