And the arrival of a new generation of Microsoft becomes more and more imminent every day. There's a new press campaign up on their site, but since not everyone has time to sit and read through page after page of marketing gimmicks, I thought I'd summarize the main points for you. Confident - Parental Controls: Excellent. Now my kid can't look up pr0n without me knowing... wait, why can't I get to my humour sites? - Fast On and Off: More startup stuff relegated to parallel loading processes once the OS is loaded. Good news for fancy people like Tido with RAID; bad news for the rest of us, whose drives can only load one thing at a time. - Diagnostics: We've heard this one before. Does "MBSA" sound familiar? - User Account Permission: users are installed as limited by default; sudo has been ported to win32, having been available on Unix-based systems for 10 or so years. - new default GUI theme. Clear - Indexing and VFS combine to form Super Saiy.. er, I mean, "Virtual Folders" which are essentially links to searches you've performed in the past. - Desktop Search: We hate competition! - Visualization: Also known as thumbnails. See also under Nautilus. - XPS: Also known as DRM. - Photos: You don't get to choose where to save pr0n anymore, so it's easier for your wife to find. - RSS feeds: IE finally catches up to Mozilla. Connected - Device synchronization: Anyone else remember the Windows '98 USB demonstration? - Mobility: Support for wireless, touchpads, and styluses (styli?) combine to make drivers.cab the single biggest file on your hard drive. - Digital Media: See under XPS. - High Definition TV: Yeah, cool for the people who can afford it. Microsoft sucks in the same way that the gasoline engine sucks. No matter how much it sucks everyone, the majority, keeps usin it cuz were waitin for something better AND CHEAPER. Linux is free, unless you count the research time required to properly install and configure which most of the world won't bother with. just like your car, turn the key and go, Microsoft is, turn it on and work. pretty little GUI's fun pointing and clicking but no real work involved. Someone made comment about how "there will be a Pro edition, that is the same but twice as expensive" have you used XP Home, and XP Pro? If you have you would immediately see the difference. Home is barebones, make the PC work with a little connectivity tooling, Pro is far superior for the avid puter/windows user. Vista isn't going to blow the doors off of XP, so far it feels like the 98/milenium/XP disaster. Like Vista is just a stopping point on the way to something better. I admit I have a beta copy of Vista and for navigation purposes it is superior, for the lay-person, but the Pro edition will have to be pretty sweet to convince my company to make a switch to it. They bought DOS from IBM, and it was a 'steal' they got it for very cheap. They changed somethings added somethings and called it MS-DOS. The windows Microsoft was planning on before they went with Vista worked on a seach-to-use -principle.. All your files are stored in one place, and you would need to search for every item. You'd have no control over storing files in some specific location since there is only one.. Winsucks EX-Pee runs smoothly enough for me. I can't imagine how (by their descriptions) Vista will be at all organised. Gonna have to upgrade to something eventually, Microsoft will stop supporting updates for XP, drivers won't be made for new hardware for XP, applications and games won't support XP.
