Can't believe there is no thread to Ep.7

Anyways, I try to keep my enthusiasm fairly in the middle, will neither go with the hype nor bash it.

First random thought: "That lightsaber has a faulty hilt, repair it..."

Watched it back on Winter Holidays at Cinema, but forgot to post my thoughts here, the ultimate place for Star Wars lol.

As others mentioned I was disappointed by the plot. It basically recreates ep4-ep6 storyline. Ofcourse, that gives hope for the next movies as there is nothing else to latch on apart from prequels.

Original cast did well, i felt like the dialogs were done in the same spirit as in the originals.

I was slightly disappointed by the new cast. Dont get me wrong, i liked the acting and i thought actors did a great job, but... characters were average at best.

Poe - a capable pilot, we see the other characters say how good he is, but he is not much of a character.

Rey - meh? Mary Sue for sure, but more on that later.

Finn - might be the best character. funny and in the right place.

Kylo Ren - unlike most people i thought the character was hilarious. After playing Star Wars games i found him to be a true typical Sith since he was whiny, had idiotic motivations and so on. Jedi Knight series and Kotor had very similar representations of Sith so i thought Kylo Ren nailed it.

Snoke - eh?

One complaint i have is that i feel like the main trio is a result of political correctness bandwagon. A strong independant woman, a black guy and a hispanic guy. Be honest, what is the chance of that being a coincidence in these times. No disrespect to the actors at all, it just seems like the creation of characters favored political correctness rather than making them interesting. Poe could have been removed from the movie completely and hardly anything would change. Also, Leia was much more compelling strong female character, capable in every way, than Rey will ever be. Quite a disappointment considering Rey is overpowered Jedi.
Also, with all the tech they have now they go and also overrepresent humans. What a disrespect to millions of species in SW universe lol.

Soundtrack - meh. No memorable tunes, most of the stuff was some remade versions of the originals. I dont just mean the main theme elements, its just... there wasnt anything new per say. All movies before had atleast a few themes that were unique. Villains didnt have nice themes, combat themes werent memorable either. meh.

One thing that i thought the movie was totally on point was the cinematography. You know how in the beginning of the movie Rey swoops by the Star Destroyer? Later in the movie when they go with a Millenium Falcon it makes use of the collapsed ship which makes it more than just a background wallpaper for the intro. Plenty of other such elements which i thought was great.

The design of all the objects was also pretty good. Nailed that futuristic tech that seems old and trashy very well.

The big problem I had, is that it all felt... rushed. It was a bunch of set pieces tied together with a pretty flimsy plot.

Also nobody really explained WHY everyone was looking for Luke Skywalker. Leia said something about him being a rallying point for the resistance, but that doesn't seem very believable. Why would both sides be going to so much effort? I mean they already had a superduperbestthingever death star. Who cares whether a single Jedi is living in the middle of no where doing nothing.

Oh and has Luke been living on a 100% fish diet? No wonder Rey was stood so far away... fish breath. Is the sea fresh water? If not where has he been getting water from?

I'm not even going to START on how "Mary Sue" Rey is. After no training she is can already "Persuade" a stormtrooper and beat a Sith? Ok he was injured but still...

There are lots of other things that don't make sense, but I can't be bothered listing them.

I did enjoy it though, and am going to see it again in 4DX :)

Personally, I didn't like it:
- I found the plot itself very weak, as others have pointed out.
- It ignores the E.U. :(.
- Han's death and its mourning are ridiculous. Leia ignores Chewbacca for Rey? Really? Even if she turns out to be Luke's daughter. Meh.
- Rey guesses she can mind-trick people, etc.
- I found Kylo's character boring. He seems a spoiled brat. Why is he not named Darth something?
- Luke looks fat :P.

I enjoyed it. As others have pointed out, it was perhaps too similar to ep4 in some respects and trying to appeal to 'original' fans more in that regard.

Frankly though I think I was just too happy to see a Star Wars movie in capable hands to be overly critical. I had high hopes for Abrams making it work, and I feel he delivered overall.

Also BB-8 is completely adorable, especially after that scene with Finn on the ship.

I found Rey very likeable. Refreshingly able, competent and charming.

I wouldnt go so far on the negativity.

For what it is, it is still an enjoyable movie to me. What I disliked is the blatant copy of Episode 4 basically. Also having to destroy that Death Star 3 had nothing to do with the initial mission (finding Luke).

Also while I do not mind Han's eventual demise, I found the plot device itself rather disappointing and just left me with a sour taste in the mouth as in "they do not want to pay Harrison Ford for another two movies, so Han has to go."

I found Finn's inate ability with the lightsaber puzzling. Also I found Rey's "awakening" without any form of Jedi training whatsoever highly unbelieveable.

But I know to little about all the background to judge it in detail, yet.

It felt a bit like they did not want to take any chacnes and just give people what they are familiar with.

At least I found that all the little details (Imperial base, Yavin design, etc. pp) were spot on and it felt like Star Wars.

I never jumped on the hype train and also I did not read any reviews beforehand, so I guess I viewed it from a different angle then some.

I still enjoyed the movie, despite its flaws.

I saw it a couple days back and actually didn´t like it. I think that The Force Awakens relies far too much on previous Star Wars material to the point where I believe that this isn´t an original plot - it's just a poorly executed summary of Episodes 4-6. Add to that the fact that I disliked both villains and Finn and thus I can't escape giving this movie a highly negative review. 1/10, very dissapointing. I apologize for the negativity, but this is simply how I feel.

On the positive side, I thought Daisy Ridley did a very good job on portraying Rey. I loved her character and was quite engaged by her. I also loved the performance by Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. The new pilot was cool as well.

in my honest opinion... not terrible, not astoundingly amazing. It was OK, I guess. Still happy to have seen another Star Wars movie on the big screen.

And I am curious how they will continue to unfold their story.

I think the objection is that it just looks really lame, regardless of how practical it is. I do look forward to seeing what they're going to do with it. Maybe the way it is used will take some of the lameness out of the saber, but we'll see.

well, you have to consider the fact that certain things do not seem practical, because we compare it to two things:

A. our own understanding of melee weapons. lightsaber is light, can be switched on and off in a matter of miliseconds.

B. our own understanding of melee weapons without consideration of the force which is fancy and mysterious and stuff.

by that i mean that even in jka there were some pretty fancy and seemingly unpractical moves that well just worked. thats the game. a better example would probably be ep2 where anakin goes dualwield. as a noob he is, he failed, but when there was hardly any reason to use dual melee weapons in real life, but there you go - effective in star wars. darth maul's staff was not really convincing in the beginning also, but it was pretty damn effective.

pretty sure they would not have thought to add that kind of saber hilt if they didnt have some sort of weird fancy saber moves to go along.

another thing is that not everything we have seen in star wars is actually that practical. there is plenty of stuff that breaks, malfunctions etc. most equipment in original star wars were rugged and clunky. podracing - you have to pretty much forget about laws of physics if you want to enjoy that. the size of droids as an example - most of them are needlessly huge. c3p0 movement is also hardly practical - no wonder it was quite often a focus of random comic relief, practicality in star wars is often thrown out of the window for humour, fancyness, making the designs seem more alien etc.

speaking of which, im glad the trailer featured plenty of weird tech.

I thought the trailer looked good, especially the X-wing scene which others have also pointed out. I thought it's funny how many galaxy-changing events take place on Tatooine, by the way, a planet that's supposedly rather remote.

I didn't care much for that new lightsaber hilt, by the way. I suppose the makers decided to take the Lightsaber and change it a bit to have a new and special weapon in the new movies. But the design doesn't make much sense to me. I mean, what could possibly be the purpose of having a light crossguard? Added defense for your hands? And what's next? A light cutlass? :P

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing how this movie will turn out. Gonna watch it for sure.

I agree about so many events happening on Tatooine, it does feel strange at times. There are rumors the planet may not necessarily be Tatooine though, but we shall see!

As for the crossguard, one other theory is that the lightsaber is so unstable that it requires exhaust vents on the sides of the saber. Not sure how the physics of that would work (it is sci fi so who knows) but I could see that as a plausible explanation.

Also, did anyone who played SWTOR think that the dark side character looked like a Sith Inquisitor?
