Level Design Classes - Beginner

Seeing as its come up once or twice in the past week or so. I'm just posting here for the attention of anyone who might be interested.

In short I was discussing with Cuthalion about level design and how simple it was to get started with. I offered to give him some tips and came up with the idea of providing some kind of class in which anyone with an interest of level design can hop along.

I've put together a little lesson plan, nothing intense, it's a casual thing amongst friends so don't worry about where you are in terms of games design skill. This is primarily an opportunity for you to have a laugh, chat about JK3 and your own creativity and hopefully you might even learn a thing or two.

TL;DR VERSION: Would anyone be interested in an informal basic level design class for JK3 (or other engines if desired)?

--------------------------------------------------

Okay, so looks like there is enough interest to get something planned. I'll try and keep the number of things to download to a minimum for now to avoid complicating matters. I was thinking something along the lines of this:

Requirements:
GTKRadiant 1.3.13
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (patched)
Latest version of Teamspeak. (Link coming)

Time & Date:
Time has changed, please check back again soon.

Note: This time is subject to change. The class will run from anywhere between 2-3 hours. If any of you have an issue with this time slot let me know and I will organise a better one. It's more of a placeholder than anything else at the moment.

Okay, work has me quite angry with this but there is little I can do about it. I'm working during the slot I placed on the post so check it in the next couple of days and I'll have a new date for you. Sorry for any inconvenience but at least it will give people a chance to grab a headset and what have you.

No problem, what your doing is a huge help so I'll keep checking, and see what happens.

Thanks Mic!

Ok, well now I know what's going on, I will have to find my headset/buy one. But I think the idea of making a map is quite exciting, and i'll try my best to be there.

Laz: I was going to do exactly that. I thought I'd added it onto the post but clearly I missed it off.

I may have to change the day. I might be working Saturday now.

Also have to fiddle around with different versions of GTK. I know what you mean Degor but I can't remember which one is best to use.

For classes of this kind I recommend you use some presentation/conferencing software so people can see on their screen what you are doing.

Parallel to your instructions they can boot up their own program and try the steps in real time on their own.

And of course get together on teamspeak and whatnot.

Source has more tools but I wouldn't say it's more complex. You have more control over lighting, models and terrain is built within the editor instead of by hand or with a third party application.

All the Unreal engines use the same editor with minor differences, there isn't much point in listing two different games as they're all backwards compatible.

The unreal engine uses subtractive modular mapping while Q3 and Source use additive mapping so there's a big difference between them.

I mentioned UT3 seperate to UT2004 for two reasons.

First, UT3 is both Additive and Subtractive. You can choose when you create a map. Obviously you would use additive for outdoor maps and subtractive for interior. Whereas UT2004 only had subtractive. (Note: UT3's subtractive mode was basically still additive just with a huge cube of geometry in the centre)

Second, because they are different enough that a tutorial for one will not be sufficient for the other.

I'd be up for it. I'll keep an eye on the classes page.

Yeah, I doubt it will be on the classes page. I'm not a member of staff (any more) or a Knight+ rank so for now any class scheduling will have to be within this post. You never know though, if it takes off then I might speak with the people upstairs!

Finally, can I just make this clear. Until I've tried this out I will only be doing a beginners class. If it goes well then I'll think about covering more advanced topics.

And another thing (this is like the third edit, seriously, I need to clarify more things), the keyword for this particular class is "Beginner". The aim is to get people started on their chosen editor and get them over the first hurdle. Learn the basics and discover your own preferred methods for creating maps.

It's fun to make levels for Q3 because it's easy, you can test them in jka (which most ppl here love). Or you can even make them for jk2. You can also show them to other ppl here. Though I already know a lot about jka mapping and I know GTK Radiant quite well.

On the other hand HL2/source mapping would be interesting because I think the tools are harder to master and the engine is a bit more complex. Perhaps you can start out with Q3 and work up to HL2? Q3 and source have many things in common so if you know Q3 source is a lot easier. ;)

Sounds like I've generated sufficient interest. I'll have a look at when I'm next available and will leave a time here. I was thinking of making it around 2-3 hours in length, preferably 2, to make sure we can get all the basics covered and so I can offer any support or answer any questions.

I'll make a list of requirements and an overview of what will be covered.

This is beginning to sound a little too formal so I'll lighten it with a smiley. :D

Also, just to be sure, what game is everyone most interested in learning to make levels for?

JK3/2, Half Life 2 (or other Source engine games), UT2004/UT3? Poll above.
