a poem by Lewis Carroll, edited by Elessar ‘You are old, Grandpa Maher,’ the young man said, ‘And your hair has become very white; And yet you incessantly stand on your head - Do you think, at your age, it is right?’ ‘In my youth,’ Grandpa Maher replied to his grandson, ‘I feared it might injure the brain; But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none, Why, I do it again and again.’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘as I mentioned before, And have grown most uncommonly fat; Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door - Pray, what is the reason of that?’ ‘In my youth,’ said the sage, as he shook his grey locks, ‘I kept all my limbs very supple By the use of this ointment - one shilling the box - Allow me to sell you a couple?’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘and your jaws are too weak For anything tougher than suet; Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak - Pray how did you manage to do it?’ ‘In my youth,’ said his grandpa, ‘I took to the law, And argued each case with my wife; And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw, Has lasted the rest of my life.’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘one would hardly suppose That your eye was as steady as ever; Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose - What made you so awfully clever?’ ‘I have answered three questions, and that is enough,’ Said his grandpa; ‘don’t give yourself airs! So let's say you do need empathy and emotional intelligence to be truly moral (and I certainly agree with that, although people who adhere to a certain other branch of moral philosophy would surely disagree) and thus having empathy and emotional intelligence is important and valuable. But how important are they in comparison to intellectual virtues like intelligence and the rest? If you want to be moral, is empathy more important than intelligence? Of equal importance? Or less important?
And the second question is: If the value of empathy is closely tied to the value of morality, that is empathy is only as good as it helps us treat other people well, then what exactly is the value of morality? One might now want to ask the question: Why is it greater and what do you base those value comparisons on? Yeah, there's plenty of stuff I've forgotten as well, so some sparring sessions would do us both good. It's true that our Jedi-like, yellow purist style isn't as populair anymore these days, but that's okay. People can play how they want. Just finished watching 'Game of Thrones - season 1'. Absolutely epic . It's refreshing to see a writer (and the series producers/writers) with the balls to kill of characters.
