Choose your weapon! -Sared - Jun 05 06:18am
I was on the Home server the other day and decided to switch to Standard Lightsaber for a couple of duels. Then Leif got on and promptly handed me my face on a silver platter. :D It's brutal reminders like that that remind me that the entire Lightsaber system is NOT what is used to be.

In speaking with people here at the Academy, I have learned that the vast majority of students and staff alike have chosen one particular Lightsaber style and have not taken the time to explore other options. On the contrary, I have tried to avoid the Standard Saber and play only with Staff and Duals. Why is this? Because after playing with the three stances of the Single saber for all the time that we played Jedi Outcast, I was more than ready for a change of pace. In my study on the three styles, I have discovered
the main elements of each, and how they might be used. Note: Some of this might be common
knowledge to some of you, to everyone else however, I hopt that you are able to put this
information to use in your experience here.

The Single Saber remains the same. It remains the middleground of all damage systems and
combos, the base against all others are judged. It is also the most complicated style,
involving the most complex moves with varying results. The entire style focuses on
balance and control, the user must have complete knowledge of what he is doing with his
weapon in order to execute a combo sucessfully.

The Staff, or, Two-Handed Saber spills onto the offensive player gladly. Its swing will
penetrate almost any defence and its strikes will plunge deep into anyone who happens to
be in its way. Put simply, the Staff is extremely offence-oriented. Users of the yellow
stance will find comfort in the similarity found here.

The Dual Lightsabers cannot be compared to any other stance. They are in a field of thier
own. They are extremely defensive and, when played correctly, can block any attack from
any angle. Also, when used correctly, they can land pinpoint head shots.

I can play a skilled standard saber user all day, but when I see that player switch saber
styles, or go to guns, or any other aspect of gameplay, and STILL be able to execute each
area of the game with the same amount of skill, then I will hold that player in a much higher regard.

It is fun to see people using the different sabers, I say go ahead and experiment with them all. Breaking up the monotony once and awhile is always good. Its also good as people here have said so far to learn the strengths / weaknesses of the different stances. After you've done all this though, choose a path and stick with it. I think people are much more effective in the stance that fits the way they think. If you are so inclined, master them all or only one or two. It really doesn't matter if you don't want to play with sabers other than your fave. What's important is having fun and the pursuit of happiness.

Single has been pointed out to have the largest number of moves / combos. This may be true, but seriously, people find a few moves that work for them and use just those almost all the time. Some combos / moves in single are just plain useless. I think the designers of JA did a great job in recognizing that fact, so the duals and staff are not necessarily as hard to learn. Any way you slice it, its all timing. If you can do single combos but have crappy timing, you get beat. Same with the other sabers. I'd venture to say that all the sabers have a near equal number of "useful" moves.

I don't think that any style is better, but I do believe that single has been studied much more. Single is much more of a disipined study than staff or duals. I hope to see this change someday and have our staffers and dualies develope the styles more. One day I think it would be possible to have a series of staffers/dualies that have reached an entirely new level.

Yah, being new to Jedi Academy (the game AND forum here!),,
my minds not really made up yet
BUT i do see most superior players stick with RED single style ...
and they beat the hell out of dual/2 hand most times
so i started training on a single...
hope to see y'all soon.

I'm a single saber user and still trying to master that. So generally don't use duals or staff (although I dabbled a little when first playing the game, who didn't) and don't start me on guns.

I have to admit at first I found that Duals/ Staffs were used in a very random, frantic, un-coordinated way by players with what appeared little skill. This due to users/opponents knowledge is, mainly, no longer the case.

Yesterday I was on the server and was talking to someone who wanted to use staff so decided to have a go, the style I adopted was based on how I fought against staff so whilst helping my staff skills also will aid my Single v Staff tactics. Saying that I also realised how little I know.

Although I might train/learn about the duals/staffs I think I’ll always be a Single Guy at heart (no pun intended). I don't know exactly why but I still like the idea of a user only mainly using one type though, as appose to switching regularly, which tends to be the case anyway. Although I have noticed that against certain ppl changing types can change the outcome.

Well I hope that made some sense.

Nice Article Uncle Sandwich :)

I mostly use single, but once in a while, duals and staff :P

To know your opponent (in dueling), you must know their strengths and weaknesses of their sabers and their movements. But without one or the other, you'll have a hard time against him/her.

Great article Sared! :D

DJK, learn to use the edit button!

anyway, nice article Sared. but i don't know that the staff cuts through any defense. more acurately it WILL cut you a big new one if there's a hole. but it's getting to the opening that's the problem. i think a good duel user could keep a staff user from getting a strike in for a good long while.

I use staff, and standard sabers to great effect (at least, I like to think so :P) I have some problems working with duals, still searching for that extra knowledge, because I want to become good at all three, it gives you something to strife for. BTW, keep your eyes on the academy forum, when I'm fully back again, I'm gonna host a very special tourney :)

i can use all three styles on the fly. im not an expert at any of them but im well rounded with them. i think it is greatly important to switch between them all and to grasp a good feel for each style. plus its fun to break up the norm and do something different every now and then.

i liked your descriptions of each saber style. pretty spot on. each style has a uniqueness about it and its up to the player to find those out.

agreed and understood...

at a time of my personal training.. I found that each time I died in a way.. I would switch to the next saber and so forth and so on.. so I would constantly have to addapt and change for each and every duel I fought

Duals rock :)
I love the precision and balance of them. They've got huge weak areas, and huge strong ones...very few in betweens :)

I think it's important that you take the time to study the other styles. That way you get a better feel for the strong and weak points, and generally what they can do :)

Cheers Sared..and thanks!
