I went for another random article on Wookieepedia. Promising that I would write about WHATEVER came up I feel like I’m about to cheat.
This was my result. Now. I’m personally a fan of the Battlefront series and, as a result, am also lamenting the loss of Battlefront 3. However, I’ve never actually played the spin-off PSP games. My father, on the other hand, has already given me his verdict on the games. So here is Battlefront: Renegade Squadron from the point of view of my papa. It’s not a bad game. I mean, it kind of plays like the standard Battlefront games but it doesn’t really have the same freedom. In the campgin, the classes and battlefield style gameplay was removed in favour of a more linear campaign, as I recall (it had been a while since he played it). There was a pretty interesting feature where you could customise your squad members' loadouts which would’ve been nice to see in Battlefront 1 or 2. I wasn’t a fan of the risk-like conquest mode in the first place and it seemed to be even more complicated in the PSP version. I guess you’d have to like that sort of game. It only really annoyed me because I wanted to shoot stormtroopers in the face, not futz about before and after each game. I think Instant Action saw more play time than any other mode. That seems to be pretty much the same as in Battlefront 2 with the classes removed of course. Anyway, there were a few story missions but they felt empty and boring. Then again, Battlefront was never well known for delivering amazing narrative. I just got bored. There was nothing memorable about the story. I remember Han Solo was in it and Admiral Ackbar but little else. The game was dumbed down, that much was obvious. I just didn’t want to go back and play once I’d completed the story. It passed the hours when waiting for something, which was enough for me to keep picking it up. I doubt anyone who isn’t a die-hard star wars fan could get into it. I imagine it might have even put a few fans off because it was a weak entry compared with the main entries. Don’t get me wrong, though, it wasn’t terrible or anything. I loved the Battlefront series and this game seems to follow its predecessors closely enough that it's recognisable. It’s just not an appropriate game for people who play on the PSP irregularly. I don’t remember finishing things without purposefully putting aside time to play. I think a few of the ideas were sound and if they were put into a console or PC version and fleshed out some it would make a pretty nice game. Also the controls were awful but that's because the PSP is the PSP. Well there you have it. My dad's opinion. |

Love it! I was chatting to my dad about KotOR earlier whilst he was playing Morrowind. Gamer dads are fun!
Never had any interest in the PSP version, but same as Masta I've never owned the system anyway. Loved the first two though, not quite as polished as the original Battlefield but still brilliant. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches?
