The Honor Of Things -Sared - Jun 08 06:07am
Scenario 1:

You are walking into the part of the map where 'all the action is going on'. To your left, someone else walks up and challenges you to a lightsaber duel. You challenge back and initiate the duel. You turn around to take a few paces baco before beginning your duel, only to turn back around to see the whizzing spin of a lightsaber and hear the *thud* sound as your drop to the floor.

Scenario 2:

You are watching a duel when someone comes up to you and challenges you. You and your oponet both leave your lightsabers deactivated and start to approach each other. At one moment, unknown to the other, one of you suddenly starts swinging, landing a couple of sucessive blows to you.

Scenario 3:

You have just initiated a duel and have distanced yourselves properly. You bow to your opponet, your opponet bows back. You turn on your lightsaber and begin approaching your opponet. Your opponet jumps out of the way and watches you. This keeps up for twenty seconds longer until you take another swing at your opponet, and your opponet turns on thier lightsaber, attacking you and landing a good hit.

Which of these scenarios represent something that you would definatley be deemed, 'unfair'. You can only pick two. :)

When in the heat of the fight, are there tactics such as these that can be deemed unfair or unhonorable, or is it all the means to an end? Does the duel begin when the opponets have bowed to each other, or when thier lightsabers are activated?

I provide the tinder, now you start the fire.

First off, excellent article Sared. I remember having a big discussion about Honor, and me supporting it hardcore to having it slapped back in my face (all of this while in the NOC, I was visiting another clan's server, oh...those days....anyways. I always learned back in my 56k jk2 days, you start a duel, the object is for the other person to get you to 0. Unhonorable people will do the scenarios above, plain and simple, whether it's them or you. Scenario 1, most of us have learned to do the jump backflip, (never turn your back on a Dueling oppenent). Scenario 2 doesn't happen so much anymore. Many, actually almost All of us do the bow of sort (either the animated hand bow or the manual kneel bow), ignite and fight to the death. Scenario 3 I've never done. n00b had it with the spook them out sort of thing, and that's some funny stuff. When I start a duel, and they don't move, I assume they are looking away for a second, afk, something that has come up to cause them not to be at full attention. Patience, kneel, and wait for them to start on up. Again, all excellent points by everyone here made. We can even spin this into,

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER, HONARABLE DUELING? as a thread...*claps for Sared*

Be honorable, be friendly, be trustworthy. Show respect to all whom you meet. Don't forget you learn when you win AND when you lose. Be the first to admit mistake AND the first to correct it. Be the shoulder for someone to lean on. Always remember those that sacrificed time to help you. Thank you Odan Wei, Vladarion, 3th, Moridin, n00b, Motrec, Faded, Leif, and Tido, you will not be forgotten as the ones to make you remember, it's all about fun...

1 and 2 in my book are definite laming scenarios that will piss people off. Its a letdown to be treated in such a way. Fun is over for them at that second because there will be no second opportunity for tham to do that to me again (I just won't duel them.)

Number 3 is pretty common. What the guy wants you to do is play on *your* belief of not attacking when the saber is down. If you chase this person before they have their saber ignited, you will feel the pain when they finally attack. Its a mind game, all part of a duel in my opinion. If it pisses you off when someone does this, just find someone else to play with. I just laugh. Sometimes I chase them just to see if I can get them spooked. Depends on the person doing it and their skill level.

in terms of honor all three should be deemed unhonorable. The first two should be obvious. The third one is well...funneh....and un honorable in the sense sense that u are the one who's is doing the unhonorable deed--attacking someone with their sabers down.
but after all is said and done, this is still a game and you should expect or demand that people follow the unspoken "honor code". getting struck when ur not ready (in the first two senenarios) is crappeh but it's not like u suffered any physical pain in the process so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. The third one, well, don't start teh action unless both of ya have the sabers up.

I like Tidos answer...cool sense of humor!

To be honest, I see all three as part of the learning curve.

Imagine....Luke Skywalker stands face to face with Vader. He nods in respect...when he looks up he see's the flash of Vaders red saber......"WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!....(wimper) I was not ready......:D

Now what is funny is suckering them into doing it again.

When it does happen, it makes the challenge harder, but more enjoyable...take it as a wake up call and really test your skill (most of the time I do die, but its fun trying to recover and give the other person a scare!)

Happy duelling all!

:P:D:P

well, this is off course highly discussable, but I'd have to say number 1 and 2 are unfair.

Why?

Well, striking someone down when he isn't even ready is just ... lame?

And that second option... It's just way unfair ... if you get my point :)

1 and 2, maybe 3. For me I think its important to pay everyone the usual respects...but if they don't I can't really get to upset about it. It is kinda funny when it happens :P. For those of you who are 'established' fighters (whatever that means), no matter what level of honor your oppenent fights with you should be able to handle it. When I start a duel, I immediately jump back, bow, and ignite. The jump is to prevent someone from getting a quick strike right off the bat (ie Showie syndrome), and the fast ignite is in case they leap right after me. But I still bow and then ignite. And one rule of thumb: never attack someone with a saber down.

Some of the things people do are just hilarious to me though. One good example is the guy who bows, and then starts walking around without his saber lit. As if I'm gonna forget he has it :P! If you get hit by this person, you're a fool :P. And if you do, laugh, don't be upset. As for those who do this (Sared!!), it will come back to bite you if you face someone who has no problem hitting someone with a saber down.

My next favorite one is the excessive bow-er. You know the type: he sees you across the map, bows, runs over, bows, challenges you, bows, duel started, bows, lights, and who knows he might bow again. I feel like Bill Murray in Lost in Translation just constantly bowing like I'm at a metal concert. But what are ya gonna do?! You gotta bow back right?! Lol, its a huge trap!

Lastly is the guy who must use a taunt, flourish, or gloat after their bow. ESPECIALLY those with duals that do the saber cross. What makes this so funny is it will be some guy who is obviously very serious about his sith appearance and needs some extra intimidation going on. So he does the cross, but I guess he never notices the chest thrust at the end of the little skit. Watching some big bad guy do that makes me laugh every time :P.

Everyone has their own flavor of it. Some people only bow for a split second, others have to do it so long you wonder if they fell asleep. Some people ignite right away, others have to stand for a moment and then do it. Enjoy them all and be thankful we are not all the same!

I have expereanced all three scenarios too. In the first two scenarios, i let him kill me without fighting back. (if they dont finish their work, i kill my self) I dont like players who do this and i wont duel him again. he wont have fun with me. Im not giving up if you may think, i would never give up even if i had only 1 HP. but if he tryes to fool me like that, i dont want to fight back. I know im better than him becouse i dont need this kinds of tricks to win. Its absolutly unhonarable to attack an unprepared player. thats why i dont fight them.
In the third scenario, i was a little more often. My way of fighting teached me that its best to ask friendly if he can ignite his saber before i do anything. I dont want to attack unamred players and if he jumps in my direction, i just dodge. its the best way in my eyes to handle that persons.

greetings,
daid

I have experienced all of these scenarios and have not been happy about it. 1 and 2 I would say are wrong ( 3 also but I am prepared for that situation now /me looks at Sared! :))

How your opponent acts is up to them you cannot control that.

Leif makes a brilliant point. If your not happy walk away only too often have I fallen to the "I'll show them" approach and that means they have already won irrespective of the result!

awww man,In war there is no honor, no pride or glory, its missery missery and missery. Ahem, now back to the questions. Well, it depends alot for me whoo i duel, if its someone on the public servers that i dont know, i usally just accept the duel and wait til he starts running at me with saber open ( wich alot of n00bs do on publics) and when he gets close enough i kick him back use red DFA and let him be that a lession about thinking before attacking :) on the other hand, i am honor able if its one of you guys from here, becourse i ether know you well, or becourse here i dont stand a chance, and that i will just get a lession learned if im so dumb to do what the n00b did, charge. Hope to get a master or training at some point, Cya all on the servers or Forum.

ps: Way to go sared!:D

I often turn on my saber right after we bow :D After doing so, we fight some, but if it's a kind of unfair blow, I just continue on. All that matters is the fun of the duel :) If you get frustrated, then don't duel anymore, you'll probabably end up doing something bad

Awesome article Sared! Keep up the good work man
