Being an Influence -Sared - Sep 02 04:07pm | |
Well, I have now played Doom 3 for about two days straight on the first three difficulty levels. This can't be healthy. I refuse to play this game any further until I have emotional support. Believe me, it's a great game with a great engine, a story that smells of Half-Life, and gameplay that sends ou to hell and back.....literally! It's games like this that are the reason I won't play a game unless it has a seizure warning on the box. While playing this horribly neurotic game, I began to think, 'What in the hell am I doing to my brain?' Was I torturing it with an overload of sensory data, or was I teasing it with new tactical information to rip apart (or rather, blow apart.) Above all, what kind of influence was I putting into my head? Here I am, playing as a future marine, doing my best to try and survive the onslaught of hell itself, and I expect myself to be able to sit calmly through sociology class afterwards? Well....um....yeah.... It is amazing how I can dismiss the thoughts and influences being put into my mind by this game, but then turn around and allow myself to be written upon like a chalkboard for two hours by a person I will probably never see again after this semester. Even more so interesting how the sheer influence of a human being on another human being can be so deeply written upon me in ways that I cannot even imagine. Such power is dangerous, and even worse, it is unrestrained. Think about it; the person you ride to school next to, or take the subway to work beside, can have a good day or a bad day depending on what you choose to say to them. You could start up a conversation with them and encourage them, give them helpful advice, maybe even share your problems with them in hopes of finding a solution, and they could turn around and have a cheerful day. Just because you decided to be an influence. On the other hand, you could start picking on them about thier clothes, what music they like, and just break them down without care for who they are. On the other hand (yes, the third hand. I am Shiva, fear me. ) you could start a conversation and find that you disagree on pretty much everything, but still find out why you disagree, and how thier beliefs differ from yours. All these are simple conversations that could happen any day. In fact, they are situations that do happen every day, and that I witness first-hand all the time. The deciding factor of them is how you choose to use your influence. Many young people growing up these days want to be the 'popular' kid; i.e., the kid with a lot of influence. The same is true here at the Academy. Influence is sought. Whether it is gained by feats, charachter, skill, or tact, it is still sought. Now, please allow me to qualify this by saying that Influence is not a bad thing to be sought; but rather, it is how it is aquired and for what reasons that can be determined to be right or wrong. Like so many other things, it is how you use your influence. In a way, I guess you could relate Influence to the Force. You can use it for good or evil, for the capacity for both remains the same regardless. On a discussion note: what are ways that you could use your Influence here to better others that you might not have done before? |

Indeed, as for speaking in negative terms, If I feel the urge to say something negative to somebody ingame for instance, Like critic someone or etc...Then I try to always back it up with a positive tip, suggestion or something. To be just negative in thinking and speaking isn't good, so it cant be a good influence on the surrounding. Just pondering....Stay afloat on the reality boat. Majno...
