I Want My MP3!!! -Tido - Sep 12 09:35am
John Williams is an amazing composer. I think we can all agree that the Star Wars soundtrack resides in a special place in our hearts. I also think that if I hear it one more time, I’ll have a hemorrhage. If you disagree and enjoy playing JK3 to a never-ending cycle of SW songs, then save yourself the time of reading this article and go write some random comments in people’s profiles or whatever else you do here. For the rest of you who want to be able to enjoy your controversial mp3 collection while you play, read on.

I feel for all of you who have tried to find a way to make a CFG play mp3s just like I did. A whole lot of time wasted away. Some of you are using killtrackers to play your mp3s, but are finding yourself in conflict with the rules on those scripts. If only there was a way to bind to your keyboard a play, pause, next, and previous button that would play a nice selection of your mp3s and run it in the background without taxing your system. Well start licking my boots because I found a way.

First off, if you don’t already have it, go download Winamp – a very small and streamlined mp3 player that you will love. It’s free and the file size is around 2 megabytes. I’m not going to cover how to use all of Winamp because it’s easy to understand and everything you need to know is on that site – no need to reinvent the wheel.

Winamp has a really neat feature about it called Global Hotkeys. This allows you to set keys or combination of keys to control the player from anywhere with just your keyboard – even in JK3. In Winamp, look in the very top-left corner and you will see a symbol that looks like a slanted infinity sign. Click that and then select Options -> Preferences (or while Winamp is selected, press Ctrl+P). In Winamp Preferences look under General Preferences for Global Hotkeys. Make sure that the ‘enabled’ box is checked. You are now ready to start setting your keys. Figure1, Figure2

To set your Play button, select it from the list of functions. Then click in the textbox at the bottom labeled Hotkey. Now hit the button or combination of buttons (example: Ctrl+uparrow) you want the function to be assigned to. You should see the button(s) appear in the textbox. Next push the ‘Set’ button to apply the setting. Go through what commands you want and assign the keys. After you close the Preferences window, the keys should start working. I highly recommend using a combination of keys (I use Ctrl + my arrow keys) because otherwise when trying to do something else, you will start sending a ton of commands to Winamp. Figure3

That’s really it. It’s a very simple thing to do, and it’s great to be able to listen to other things without jumping in and out of JK3. A few other tips would be to set your Winamp volume to 25% because you want the music to be background music and not overpower important sounds of the game. I also want to warn you against playing really sad or mellow songs as you will lose all desire to defeat your opponent, deactivate your saber, and wish that /amhug was enabled. Keep Rawking!

for those of you who dont use windoze, I can only suggest to use iTunes (and for the windows users as well), XMMS, and the newly released Beep-Media-Player, the latter 2 for the *IX platform, respectively. BMP is based upon XMMS, but features gtk2 widget and font rendering support. its the most beautiful interface i have ever seen. *shameless plug* :P

Every time I see XMMS' default skin, I get this weird feeling down my back that I'm using a Linux port of Winamp... or maybe the other way around... :/

Found out that if you say Always on Top (windows settings - docked tool bar - always on top) you can see Winamp over JK3 when in full screen. You can see the winamp windows at the top

I suggest you minimise the windows so you can see the game. I just have the Main Window and Play list up so i can see the song name. Not sure about performance tried it a few times and it seems good.

Thanks alot ROan! ive had winamp for a long time, and i never knew that. :D

If you have NNScript, you can use the player in IRC too. Less performance hit on your game.

I never thought of that Roan, neat! :D

I also want to mention that what skin you use will affect your performance. If you use a very complicated and flasy skin, you may see a noticable drop in your FPS. All depends on how good your computer is I guess (mine = teh suxage).

As much as I love the SW music I'll give this a go.

There was a mod for JK2 that allowed you to scroll through music within the game that was pretty cool but not managed to get it working in JK3.
