Someone help me, I have issues, and lots of 'em.  Among one of the more entertaining of these problems I have is an apparent f#$%ed-up-edness in my sleep schedule since last Tuesday. It goes like this: stay awake for twenty-four hours, get a three to four-hour stretch of sleep at some point the next day, then do it again. It is very intriguing being as I have been able to function to an only slightly lesser degree of my normal performance, and still manage not to hallucinate gremlins. But let me tell you, the Tooth-Faerie is getting annoying as hell... First and foremost however, I am a buyer. I make money in order to spend it. When a co-worker asked me what I thought of my job, I told him, "It's not because I love the work. I'm a whore, I do it for the money." There are, however, bonuses that kicked in this week that actually make me enjoy my job. For starters, Friday afternoon after I got off of work, I walked home with a copy of the new Star Wars DVD collectors edition, and spent a very enjoyable weekend away from my computer. How did I survive? Some of my good friends, a 24-pack of Bawls, oh yeah, and a LAN with 3 XBOX's running Halo. Whenever there were not death threats or plasma grenades being thrown around, we would plug in the next DVD and bask in the glory that is the love of our lives. Now, go break open your piggy bank, annoy your parents, or rob rich celebrities (preferably all three), and buy this collection. Now. Did I mention it has a really pretty box? Oh yes, very pretty. My precious.... In the re-release of the series on VHS a while back, the film itself had needed a good scrubbing, as the originals were starting to decay and ruin with age. Now, with a complete digital make over (no wonder Episodes 2-3 are taking so long...) the movies are brought into the complete vibrancy of computer-adjusted perfection. For example, the rancor fight in Return of the Jedi? The rancor was inserted with the best ability that Lucas had avaliable to him at the time, which do not compare to the blue-screening techniques that we use today. When you watch the same scene, you will see that the rancor has been blended into the scene seamlessly. Other such tunings include some of the platform scenes on Bespin, and the lighting issues experienced on Tatooine. Naturally, the entire sound track has been re mastered and balanced to come to the high quality that John Williams heard when he first directed the pieces. The set also includes all the juicy extras that you would expect from a DVD of this kind, deleted scenes, TV spots, and the original 'making of' documentary that was sold with the old VHS box set. Oh, and it includes a demo of Star Wars Battlefront. Wee. Back in May, I got pretty hyped about this title. Forgive my ignorance... However, I am an optimist, so I will choose to look upon the good first before the bad. The game uses the same environmental lighting technique that GuildWars or Deus Ex 2 uses, and to good effect. The battlefields, while 'historically' accurate, focus more on the sheer bigness, in sacrifice of detail. Yeah. Thats all I can think of. Someone pull out the toilet paper now. You suck. Seriously. Remember all the thousand of extras that played as stormtroopers or ewoks or Naboo guards? The kind that came a dime a dozen? You are one of those. Your advantage? You have somewhat better aim and judgment than the hundreds of other AI. Oh, thats another thing, due to the sheer number of AI that the game runs, they chose to program them with mass-tactic behavior. At least they will differ to you if you want to drive any of the vehicles. Otherwise, their piloting abilities are just as good as their shooting abilities. Now, there are Jedi that fight for both sides as well. Thing is, they are just as stupid, but they do a lot more melee damage. Online play has little redeeming value to it whatsoever. The difference is that you are playing with the same easy-to-kill bots, but with better aim. Oh, and constant chatter from all the other players who can't shut the hell up about how good the game is. When I first plugged the game in, I was expecting something more like Battlefield 1942, or maybe Dynasty Warriors. In fact, a play either one of those would have been good. Rather the entire experience, for both PC and XBox, seemed very incomplete. If Republic Commando fails me like this, heads will roll. |

Mum asked me if we want to DVD box set yesterday, but we both thought it'd be better to wait until we can get all 6 in a box set. And then 7 8 & 9 are gonna come out Given how Lucas likes to continue making massive changes--not just effects tweaking, but actual changes--if you like the movies now then get the DVD set now.
