The last couple of weeks have been in-freakin-sane. That plus a really bad case of writers block and I am completely unable to write about anything for a little under a month now. Fortunately, I saw this thread a couple of days ago and realized that I might be able to address this and provide some helpful information. DISCLAIMER: I use HLSW as my program of choice. This is only the second or third time I have ever even installed ASE onto my system. I primarily use HLSW, but will do my best to keep this review as unbiased as possible. I'll start with the vital stats for each program first. All-Seeing-Eye v2.3.6 12 kb download 1 meg install Trial version is free, full version is either $30 for Lifetime subscription, or $15 for a yearly subscription. HLSW v1.0.0.36 1.53 meg download 3.44 meg install Open Beta (free) I was suprised when I downloaded the small installer for ASE, but then was disappointed when it started downloading the program itself. Call me paranoid, but this requires a lot of trust on the users part, hoping that the downloader is not loading any....'unwanted' software on to your computer. After the initial install though, I was fine. When ASE first loads it lets you configure you basic settings and confirm the currently supported games that you have installed on your system. After that, I was able to select the game, pick a game mode from the drop-down menu, and bring up all the servers running that game. RCON support is somewhat basic, giving you a console and a command prompt. No frills, no extra utilities. HLSW was a clean download, even though they were all on Euro servers, the bandwidth was good enough for me not to notice. Installation was short and to the point, with no frills or fancy options other than installation location. When I loaded it up I confirmed the installation locations, similar to ASE, and was them presented with the program itself. Unlike ASE, HLSW does not scan server lists. Rather, you can paste the IP's of your favorite servers to one of the headers and it will automatically list the servers information and saves it to your serverlist. RCON support is much better, even includes IRC bot support for certain games, and GetLog commands for Internet or LAN servers. When all is said and done, I will use HLSW because it is free and functions as a server list. When I go out pubbing, I will normally recieve the IP from someone else instead of browsing for the server myself. Try them both, and say what you think! |

The Server spy i use is called Kali. Kali was the first multiplayer internet gaming utility ever. It is the grand daddy of all (I'm not joking.) Go to: http://www.kali.net It is 16 dollars for a lifetime membership. You can play new games through it as well as old i.e. IPX only games through it. You can play via a chat server, host a lobby which acts as a LAN (wink, wink) or see the servers for almost any game that has dedicated servers. Members can host their own chat servers (similar to IRC) for no extra charge. You can hook up with other people, download files, send kali mail, etc, etc, etc... _______________ Gone but hopefully not forgotten... This comment was edited by n00b on Dec 16 2004 01:36am. |

I use ASE...its totally free. Once every week theres a popup message asking you to register. It says something about 1000-something days here.. edit: I'm not shure if i understand you correctly, but there is a server list thing in ASE, favorites, where you can add IP's. It's easy to handle. Also, some times when i play public i'll just find some random good-ping server, and sometimes i'll go via an IP. Kinda easy... and, the ASE instalation is good enough for me...you don't have to do it more than once anyway This comment was edited by Rampage on Dec 10 2004 01:53pm. |

I use HLSW as well... Well, is there possibility to view what's happening on the server (like in console), without logging on server? My friend uses "Rcon Unlimited" for accessing rcon commands without logging on server, but it seems (I didn't know that HLSW supports rcon commands without connection on server as well, lol) _______________ Johauna's Bio | When I am GRANDMASTER...! | StarCraft II Protoss Learner | Wannabe GrandMaster Leaguer | How to NOT play StarCraft II Specialist |

another one to add to the list of options: Q Tracker Q as in Quake so it only works with quake engine games aparently, Freeware Stores passwords etc for your servers Has favourites list which it automatically pings & polls for your friends list. You can scann for pub servers & it does a pretty good job. Downside?? Dunno about Rcon - there aint no server silly enough to let me have it so I've never tried ... but it is there. And it closes when you use it to start up your game ... dunno if this is a downside or not really. By preference - I use it ... free, passwords, & servers on demand. Now i'm gonna try HLSW just for the heck of it _______________ Proud to be Padawan to Sared "It's not over 'till I WIN!!!" I'm an ASE man myself. Also, although you technically have to pay for the 'full version' ASE you can go by just fine with the 'trial version' which has pretty much all the functions and can be extended indefinitely. |
