Unbreakable? Solid? Stiff? Hard?

There are oodles of moments in video games that make you weep. Things that halt the otherwise quite smooth running flow of progress through your beloveds. Why has the Jedi Knight series been any different, you ask? Why oh why has difficulty given us a miss. The answer to that question lies solely in ourselves, as fans and lovers of the series, why should a game we love more than life itself be anymore difficult than our real life hobbies? (Or other games for that matter.)

So, what is my point?

I believe that certain games, and certain series, have become more than just a ‘thing you do’. They have evolved into a subconscious hobby, something we feel a commitment to under our blanket of reality. It’s true… When I first started playing Dark Forces 1 and 2, I found myself becoming slightly attached to it, but it wasn’t until the discharge of its latest two pieces of fan-food that I felt a more habitual urge. Many of you, I’m sure, would have felt a similar way about this marvelous series. So is it possible that a love and addiction to a video game can develop? And if that is true then does that make us better?

No. The game itself is as any other game. It has its difficult moments and its easy moments, its boring and it’s exciting. It has its good features and its “WTF?”’s. But due to the way we have chosen to view its history, its background its relationship to a massive, fan loaded universe (SW), that we have decided to take a further interest in this game. As a Star Wars fan, would you have spent hours upon hours of time on a server incessantly dueling with the same person, simply to better yourself, on a game like Gore? Our experience with its past or any kind of involvement with the Star Wars galaxy is just one of the many features in JK2 and 3 that has drawn this amazing community together and kept it strong for so long.

It’s true; other games have just as impressive fan bases and communities backing them up and over its interest period. Counterstrike and Soldier of Fortune have both had great support and whatnot from their fans and others that have developed a love for playing them and improving their own ability. Whether it is competitively or just because of a fondness they have adapted for that particular game. The way a game is built, intentional or no, will reflect on the follow-up attention it receives. For example, JK2 and 3’s combat system was so basic and simple... that developing individual and effective forms, strategies and techniques has been easy to do. This adds complexity and continuity for a game that would have died long ago otherwise. Think about it, before you came to TJA, or before you played religiously online. Did you ever think that the Jedi Knight series was going to be as deep as it is?

So, to reflect, a game can be much more than a game. It might not be intentional, but the JK series and many that surround it have had a big effect on the lives of many people. People have become addicted, gained a fondness for and found a reason to continue playing what is now an old game. This community has been established to help people improve their game and to have fun with other fans at the same time. How many of these communities do you think have been successful with other games? Try to name 5 other games you’ve played half as much as you played here with us boring old saps.

To be completely honest, JK2 and 3 have set a new par for video games. We want depth and the ability to continue the games legacy ourselves!! Via communities, mods, skins, maps and the ability to diversify ourselves with the combat system!

Peace and love guys!

Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??"

i think that the reason JK2 and 3 have impacted so hard on everyone hear is because ever since you watched Star Wars you wanted it to be real, i know i did anyway, and these games have become more than games because we developed them to become part of our lives to fulfill our desire for a real Star Wars.

Mic Den, your article has hit me like a train with a great videogame epiphany. Thank you.

As for the creeping death... I agree. The last time I logged in, I was the only person logged on at the time. I've never in my time seen that happen before. I know that I'll be one of the last people to check it though.

Nice work Mic, I thought it was an interesting article. I have not thought about what-makes-people-like multiplayer games this way before.
