Movement, Gameplay & You -Augusta_Mintaka - Apr 14 07:12pm | |
Hello from Capitalist Media, this is Amik_Mintaka reporting in with a short article!
I would like to bring up an evolving trend in gaming play where freedom of movement is increasing at a rapid pace. The old way of gaming seems to be falling to this new phase where getting from Point A to Point B is not just a trivial task, but is evolving into a multilayered process where we must use logic and dexterity to arrive at our destination. This major push in First/Third person gaming is being modeled after Parkour & Freerunning. ------------------------------ Parkour- An athletic discipline in which practitioners, known as Traceurs, traverse any environment in the most efficient way possible using their physical abilities; Parkour commonly involves running, jumping, vaulting, rolling and other similar physical movements. (Yawiktionary) Freerunning- The activity of combining Parkour with gymnastics to pass obstacles and demonstrate athletic talent. Most often used in urban environments. (Yawiktionary) ------------------------------ These two activities are gaining popularity around the world and are seen regularly on websites such as Youtube. This is reflected upon the current gaming trend where high profile games like Mirror’s Edge, Assassin’s Creed and Prototype focus on freedom of movement at an unprecedented level in the gaming world. Although the players in-game freedom has been an aspect in other games such as Tomb Raider and even the Jedi Knight series, it is only now that computer hardware is allowing a realistic level of freedom. In the past we saw walls, buildings and such structures as obstacles, but the current direction of gaming is creating pathways from what used to be regarded as obstructions. A prime example of this is the game Mirror’s Edge where the player is constantly faced with having to scale buildings and advance through a gauntlet of movement puzzles. We can see this in action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N1TJP1cxmo. I believe this kind of game play will continue to expand in the coming years and perhaps overtake traditional linear game play. Yet, there is a time and place for simplicity in gaming; linear game play will never be truly obsolete. Headshots and camping will always be popular amongst FPS lovers! I’d like to end this article with a few questions for readers: Do you believe Parkour/Freerunning game play will become a dominant style in the near future? Do you enjoy this gaming style over more the more traditional first/third person game play styles? How do you envision parkour/freerunning being used in future games, perhaps even JK4? Thank you for reading! |

Mirrors Edge was repetitive, but fun when you ration your gameplay. Assassins Creed is a blast as I'm sure AC2 will be even better.

I would love this in JK4 and I do agree that this is probably the wave of the future. Especially as advances in videogame controls will immerse us more into the environment of the game.

Nice article. I've always been really fascinated with the amazing feats of strength and finesse freerunners possess.
They should make a freerunning game. |
