Bambino's curse: real or not?

Total War!

When most baseball fans think of the Red Sox, they almost always think of that dreaded curse. Heres an article I found that you can read. Feel free to think what you want of it.

/quote
Ever heard of the singer who goes by the name "Peaches"? Probably not, right? And even if you have, you may not like her as Peaches is very much an acquired taste — But I'm telling you Peaches has the Red Sox theme song pegged right now. Check out these lyrics from the song "Operate."

Just keep it going
Just keep it going
Just keep it going

He's not dead, he's gonna live
He's not dead, he's gonna live
I see his eyes rolling back in his head

You really have to hear it to appreciate it. Unfortunately, none of the 30 sec samples feature the "He's not dead, he's gonna live" chorus which is the truly a propos part for a Red Sox team that is still alive (barely). (Though you can buy the song at iTunes for 99 cents. Go ahead and humor me by getting it. C'mon. And while you're there, check out this Peaches tune as well. Too funny.)

So the Red Sox are definitely not dead.

Quantrill started Ortiz off with a ball, then a called strike. After another ball, Quantrill came in with a fastball that tailed in toward the left-handed hitting Ortiz. He read the pitch instantly as the same one that Quantrill has had success with against him before, and he hooked it high and very deep … (Silverman)

And, now, confession time. I did not stay up to see the triumphant twelfth inning into the Yankees' bullpen walk off blast by David Ortiz. Want to know what else? I didn't watch any of it. Not a single pitch. Not a single swing. You can berate me as being a fair weather fan. Whatev. I was just too pissed after Saturday night especially with the way things were going to give the Red Sox any more of my time. Sorry fellahs, when you're stinking up the joint, you can't beat Desperate Housewives for my viewing attention.

Yes, dear readers, I had arrived on Sunday to bury the Red Sox not to praise them. I can't be the only one in Red Sox Nation to have done so, can I?

So they're not dead. But are they gonna live?

Even as they faced elimination against the Yankees in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, the Sox finalized plans to go with Martinez in Game 5 today at Fenway Park and announced Schilling as their Game 6 starter tomorrow in the Bronx if they got that far (Hohler).

I'm not ready to say I've regained the confidence I had a week ago, on the eve of the first game. Heck, I don't even think I have half of that fortitude back. That defeat Saturday night is not something I can just pretend didn't happen. Can't just wish it away. But there is hope. Yes, there is hope.

[Note: I just did a quick search of Bambino's to see if I'd mentioned Peaches before and, much to my embarrassment, I did and even mentioned and linked to the song "Operate" in almost the very same way as I did on this post back on July 6th! Dang. Too late now to start over. I feel so finite. Please forgive my repetition. It appears ever more likely that I'll fade into my senior years as one of those guys who repeats the same story over and over and over. "Did I ever tell you about the time…?" Ah, only like 500 times, old man.]

With Eyes Cast Downward

Are we left to conclude that the 10.5 game back to 2.5 games back Aug/Sept Red Sox, the best record in baseball since the All Star Break Red Sox, the "better team than the Yankees on paper" Red Sox were not the real Red Sox, but that the uninspired .500 ball Red Sox of May and June were the true article?

Or are we going to go with the thinking that all of a sudden the Yankees have morphed into this unstoppable club that no one on earth can beat?

A week or so ago I made the statement that "the best team always wins" and was immediately taken to task via emails and comments on the site that this was not the case. I was willing to concede that, indeed, sometimes the better team does get left behind.

But with that said, is there anyone left who wants to argue that the Red Sox are actually the better team than the Yankees?

If so, you may also want to tackle the job of defending Scott Peterson in the murder of his wife Laci.

Meanwhile, once again the Red Sox are in the record books for all the wrong reasons,

Bronson Arroyo and five relievers shared the role of "Firestarter" and surrendered 22 hits, including 13 for extra bases, resulting in the Yankees establishing a record for runs scored in an LCS game in the longest nine-inning game in postseason history, while taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series (Horrigan, Herald).

And Bob Ryan doesn't mince words:

August seems a long time ago. The Anaheim series seems a long time ago. The idea that the Red Sox accomplished anything good at all this season seems inconceivable. The only thing that resonates now is the idea that, once again, the Red Sox have been beaten by the Yankees, this time in an incredibly undignified manner (Globe).

Last year on October 17th, one day after the 7th game of the ALCS I suggested there's nobility in loosing such a close one, in fighting the good fight with the Yankees. Last year, as Red Sox fans, even in defeat we could hold our heads high.

A year later, I make no such pronouncements. There is no dignity at hand today.

McDreams of McPlayoffs

I'm hoping this is a good omen. Last night I dreamt that I was hanging out with Manny Ramirez at a McDonald's. (Manny had the Big N' Tasty Extra Value Meal and an extra Big Mac. I had the Double Cheeseburger Extra Value Meal. Neither of us Super Sized our orders.) And while we ate Manny asked if I'd do the voiceovers in a new video short he was having produced about his career with the Red Sox. I awoke before I had a chance to say, "Yes, by all means yes!"

Now the reason I'm hoping this is a very good presage of possible playoff pomp, is that previous dreams have involved the Yankees. Long time readers, for instance, may recall the dream where Derek Jeter and I were best friends. (And how can anything good come from that? Talk about your Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams. Jeez.)

Meanwhile I now have McDonald's completely on the brain. It took all of my will to not stop there for a Sausage McMuffin this morning. And if the weather clears, it'll be an Odyssean struggle not to be lured by the siren call of the golden arches. (Perhaps I should put beeswax in my ears and lash myself to my cubicle?) Don't get me wrong. I'm not in the anti-McDonald's "they are destroying the whole world and must be stopped at all costs!" crowd. (I'm an avowed lover of fast food, if you recall.) It's just that (per doctor's orders) I'm trying to lay off the salt intake and, per my own motives, I've been far more calorie conscious after hitting 40 than at anytime previously. (The eat anything I want even if it's two pepperoni pizzas and a bag of chips with no deleterious bodily effects days are, shall we say, a distant memory.)

So, am I, with all this fast food banality, trying to avoid a serious discussion of the Red Sox? Why, yes, I do believe I am.

What's left to say? The Boston Red Sox have to win tonight. (Or tomorrow in case of a probable rain out. It's that simple. As fans, we can be positive about the club's chances or we can wallow in the wretchedness of "it's happening to us again!" But that won't change the simple fact: The Red Sox need to win one.

Bring On the Bride

There's no other way to put it: The grave has been dug. The pine box has been inserted 6 feet deep, and the Red Sox are in it on their backs, breathing but unconscious. All that's left is to nail down the cover and start shoveling the dirt.

Oh, of course, of course, one can escape such an ignominious end to the season. One can escape being buried alive. We saw the Bride do it in Kill Bill Vol 2, right?

The only problem is The Red Sox are not doing a very good job impersonating the Bride. Well, I take that back. They are doing a very good job of being the Vol 1 comatose Bride in a hospital bed being "looked after" by Buck ("Who likes to … ";). Will we see the Sox regain consciousness and fight the way the Bride did?

I want to see some swordplay. I want to see the Sox eliminate the Yankees as if they were knee socked, chain swinging Go Go Yubari at the hands of the Bride wielding the Hanzo.

Red Sox, the Yankees are Bill. Cut to the action sequences, OK?

"Those of you lucky enough to have your lives take them with you. However, leave the limbs you've lost. They belong to me now."

That's what I want to hear.

Ok now just a simple question...why does everyone hate the yankees so much? I dont understand it :D

americans are usually a fan of the underdog, and with the NYY having been to the post season so much and having such a dominant team, it's hard to be like, "oh i hope they can pull it out!" they usually win, they're expected to win, so where's the fun in rooting for a team that supposed to win anway? that's kinda how i see it anyway :)

on another note, i lost a lot of respect for the NYY fans the other night after the display of throwing stuff on the field after calls that were obviously wrong got corrected. :o

Congrats to the Sox on their amazing comeback!

Just so ya'll know, they aren't the 1st team in sports history to come back from a 3 games to none deficit, just the 1st in MLB history. It's happened twice in the NHL: the Leafs (don't remember the year) and the 1975 Islanders.

Congrats once again to the Sox!

I'm not really one to believe in curses or anything of the sort. It is however rather interesting how events in the past have all lined up to make this so called curse look like it has substance. Only way we will really know is after game 7. I personally would like to see the Yankees make it because I'm a New Yorker. Their coach seems to have his head in his (_!_) sometimes which is why if they didn't win, it wouldn't really bother me that much.

Also, the Yankee's have been playing horribly the last couple of games. YUCK!!! :P Well, good luck to both of the teams. For the Yankee fans out there, lets just hope that they pull out some of that good ol' Yankee comeback luck that they seem to almost have an unlimited supply of. :D
