i think it was done on visits to the cinema

If it was, that doesn't change the fact that there were more people when Titanic came out. It also doesn't change the fact that people had a lot more disposable income when Titanic came out. For those of us old enough to remember, Star Wars came out during a very bad economic period for America--It's amazing anybody was able to buy a ticket at all, which makes its box-office take all the more impressive.

WHAT...TITANIC, I HATE THAT MOVIE I CARNT STAND IT, IS SOO BORING

Remember that a dollar in 1977 is not the same as a dollar in 1998.

Another thing to consider is that the world population is growing. There were a lot more moviegoers when Titanic came out than when Star Wars came out, so it had an obvious advantage in trying to pull in audience.

Plus, even adjusting for inflation, people are wealthier now. Even if the world population had not grown, people still had more money to spend on movie tickets when Titanic came out than they had in 1977. If people had had more money in 1977, Star Wars might have grossed a lot more.

thats true

Two questions, and something to keep in mind:

First, is "box office hit" measured by how much money it makes?

Second, if that is how it's measured, is it adjusted for inflation?

Remember that a dollar in 1977 is not the same as a dollar in 1998. If you measure these things in dollars, it's like measuring two people's height with rubber bands--they might actually be the same height, but one may be 35 rubber bands tall and the other only 5 rubber bands tall. Just as a rubber band stretches, the value of a dollar changes.
