to Tivo or to not Tivo

I got a Tivo for christmas, and some other people all went in together and gave me enough cash to sign up for the lifetime membership.

It "is" the thought that counts in my opinion, and I am much happier just having something to open than a check, so I totally understand why my parents got me a Tivo over cash, but I have some concerns.

1.) Only "try" watch 2 TV shows South Park and Aqua Teen hunger Force.

I wrote "try" for a very good reason, even though those are the only two I try to see, I still rarely see them, so it would be nice, to be able to watch them whenever I want.

2.) Yes, since I have the money and I know I can use this forever, but does anyone know what the lifetime of this will "really" be. I mean isnt regular cable that we all know have grown up with going to replaced with HD within the next 15 years?

3.) Do poeple who get a Tivo start to watch "more" TV?

I had a roomate once who used to watch about as much TV as me (definitely under 3 hours a week) After he got a Tivo, it started to recommend programs he might like based on his current viewing habits. Now he watches like 10 hours of TV a week!

4.) I read "rumors" on another internet forums claiming some interesting and believable facts. Tivo Allows us to skip commercials, yet commercials are really what makes TV possible. That is how ever show makes its money. Companies are not gonna want to advertise, if 1/2 the world is skipping thier commercial, why pay $200,000 for people to "not" watch your commercial? So the "rumor" is that now everytime you try to skip a commercial an ad is gonna pop-up which you can manually close. Again this isnt fact just a rumor, but it does have a solid idea behind it.

So on one hand I am a geek, I like technology and having the new toys to play with is always fun, but I dont watch much TV and I dont wanna become one of those people that does watch like, 3 hours of TV a day.

So to all of the people who have/had/tried Tivo let me know what your experience has been like.

I have tivo, and it really is incredibly useful. As for the commercials, the companies are just going to have to change their commercializing tactics. Because you really can't just skip them, you have to fast-forward past them (at FF speed 3, it goes really fast, though) they just have to do something which either tricks the tivo-er into stopping the fastforward and going normal speed, or makes them want to see the commercial. No popups, just a new way to do things.

Also, i only watch two tv shows. Tivo records the new episodes, leaves reruns alone (because i told it to: it doesn't have to) and keeps them in the Now Playing list until i want to watch them. There are also some other things it watches for, like any danny kaye movies on TV or whatever, but mostly it just does those two shows, plus whatever my parents like to watch. But really, while it may seem useless with VHS and recording tapes and whatnot, all that stuff is really just so much of a hassle it's not worth it. (Did you put the tape in? was it blank, or at least something we don't care if it gets overwritten? were you on the right channel? Did you set the timer correctly?) With tivo, it's not even the press of a button. Set up a season pass and it recods with or without you even knowing about it.

As for the tivo suggestions, they only make you watch more TV if you let them make you watch more TV. i ignore that list unless i'm bored and want to laugh at what tivo thinks i should watch.

Fun fact: Tivo is joining with netflix, so soon you can have movies delivered right to your Now Playing list!

Well then. Just so you know, just because I don't post often doesn't mean I don't lurk this place multiple times every day...

most modern VCRs let you skip recorded commercials as well - so a Tivo really isn't that different in that respect.

I second that, 3th! :P

well, I don't know about that other stuff, but Tivo only allows you to skip commercials if you've recorded the program. Otherwise you get to watch them just like everyone else. So no, I don't think this will hurt advertising revenues any.
