Online C++ Programming Course is starting

cmad, Orion (when he's not too busy), and myself will be starting a C++ programming class very soon.

If you've ever been even slightly interested in programming but didn't know where to start, this course is for you. We'll start from the very basics and slowly work our way to some more advanced and more useful concepts of general programming, C, and C++.

We'll be teaching on IRC twice a week for a while. Check our website for more details and sign up if you're interested at http://cppcourse.ath.cx.

Among the information you will find there is the class schedule. Classes will be held on Mondays at 15:00 GMT (3:00 PM) and Wednesdays at 14:00 GMT (2:00 PM). This will be subject to change depending on the kind of turnup we get and people's schedules, but for now, that's the situation. The first class will be held on Jan 19, that's a wednesday. Location will most likely be #cppcourse on Quakenet. In any case, we will keep you posted on our site.

Also on the site, you can find a brief program outline and what you need to get started.

If you have any questions you can go directly to the site and ask there (although we don't have forums yet, cmad is working on it), or you could ask me here.

We would be glad to hear any questions/comments/suggestions you may have, and let's make this good! We hope to see a lot of your nicknames (I can't say faces :P) there.

UPDATE: CMAD'S WORD
Quote:
Hello folks. Some of you might remember me.

I just wanted to add the following:

This course is supposed to be the continuation of last year's C++ course (whose site can be found here). The difference is, this time the class isn't sponsored by the Jedi Academy Sciences Department, because there is none (it died I guess). This means the course is now fully independent from the JA, so even non-JA members can sign up (i.e. you can tell your friends to come if they want).

And a second note: Orion will probably not be teaching this year, since he's a very busy man. He might start teaching again when he has more free time.

cmad ~

PS. We would be glad to see the people that took part in the last (unfinished) course (i.e. Battlin Billy, ozzcoz, Squibit, and whoever I might be forgetting)

UPDATE2: Times changed a little.

Sorry for the site outage, but it seems like someone felt the need to "borrow" my server's power cable causing the ~140 days uptime to vanish... I hope I'm going to get this fixed tonight (i.e. find another power cable). Either way, the class is still on for tomorrow.

EDIT: Fixed... But they stole my "UPS slot", and now my server is on its own. I have to find a workaround...

Ok, Im not going to claim to be a programming master or anything, but I do work as a Software Engineer and I do have some experience teaching CS (especially intro stuff) so I would like to help anyway possible.

Well yes, I have to admit I was skeptical myself at first. But these classes really help people develop an interest in the subject. People can come and ask us direct questions. Of course, if you are really serious about it and want to learn it properly, this class will never be enough on its own.

As we go along, we will post everything we do on the site. I predict that eventually the site itself will hold all the course material and the IRC sessions will only be Q&A as an addition to the material on the site. But for now, the online sessions will do.

Don't think that you will come out of this a master programmer. We are merely trying to get people who don't have a clue about programming interested, and help them get started.

Wait are you saying this actaully worked?

I hate to be such a pesimisst, but teaching a course on IRC? That seems absurd.

How is it not just better to find a really good programming book and just hold a Q&A session on IRC after an alloted time is set to read the chapter (or webpage)?
