 That sounds eerily like what my job tried to do to me. Wait, no, that's just because it was a brainless, easy job. :D (stocking shelves - I'm 16, what do you expect?)

Well, a couple things...

Six-figure salaries are nice, but they don't last. And when you need to go looking for your next job, your prospective new employer will want to know what you have accomplished in the past couple of years at your old job. It is not a joke that there are bosses who do not fire people they dislike but instead put them in positions where their skills atrophy for a few years and then fire them. It seriously looks like that was the plan for this woman: Keep her doing nothing for four or five years, then cut her loose, and she's screwed. It really looks like they were mad at her and trying to wreck her career. And $100,000 a year in New York translates into around $45,000 a year after taxes, so it's not like she was getting rich enough to retire and just not have to work any more.
