I've seen someone who decided to manipulate an image of the ink stained finger to be the middle finger, thus they can give the finger to the terrorists by voting. And if you start hearing the claims that they are only reporting the percentage of eligible voters that voted and not the percentage of voters against the entire population of Iraq, just remember that almost 40% of the population of Iraq is under 14 and thus ineligible to vote. So they're already reduced to around 60% of the population. If only half of them voted it would only be 30% of the total population and you know how some nutjobs would scream about that. Trust me they scream, loud and usually you think they need to be committed to an institution for what they say.

Nobody knows what the voter turnout was, nor will we until they're done counting the votes, but initial reports suggest about 72% turnout.

I've never been a fan of the obsession with high voter turnout. Historically, high voter turnouts have not been the sign of stable democracy that we like to pretend they are. Low voter turnout tends to mean that, mostly, the people who care enough to read up and get informed about the issues are going out to vote. High voter turnout tends to mean that every bozo who is stirred up emotionally about some issue is going out to cast his vote on things he knows nothing about. If you want to see an example of relatively high voter turnout, you need only look at the process that put the Nazis in power.

Iraq is a very different case, obviously. The terrorists threatened to kill anyone who voted. They'll do anything to stop democracy. The Iraqi people turned out in droves to show their willingness to lay everything on the line to create a democracy. In a larger sense the election was a referrendum on the very concept of democratic rule and a free society, and an overwhelming number voted for democracy and against the terrorists, even though they must have been afraid to do so. If Iraq turns into a stable, prosperous democracy, I would expect voter turnout to dwindle to about the fifty percent mark over the next decade or two.

While normally I would use this as an excuse to go on a tiraid on the "War on Terror", this is neither the time nor place.

All I will say is that the whole Iraqi election is awesome. Democracy is a powerful tool, a foundation for a free nation.

However; I did think that it was kind of ironic that the actual turnout was about the same as it is in the U.S., about 50%.
