Okay, but the "how typically American" remark is not necessarily an insult in this case. Not to me, anyway. The kind of thing is representative of a large segment of my culture--not of everyone--in a number of ways. Firstly, it's radical free speech. In-your-face free speech can mean hotheads just trying to offend people, but on the balance I'm a fan of it. Remember Jesus talking to the Pharisees? Martin Luther's 99 theses? The Declaration of Independence? All examples of in-your-face free speech, and yes, some people got their panties in a wad in each case. Americans who hate Michael Moore are happy to fight and die to protect his right to make a movie. We love free speech. Secondly, it's unabashedly "hawkish" on the subject of the right to vigorous self-defense and the right to arm oneself to the teeth. Not all Americans believe in that, but enough of us that I'd call it an important American value.
