They ARE National Socialistic, though, so why's that funny? They're socialists (e.g., Hitler wanted to help the workers, it was for the people, etc.), and they're extremely nationalistic (more the latter than the former in this country). And Java's spot on with that definition of Liberal, that's what it means to us... in Danish the party is actually just called "Left", because they started out as a party for the farmers. |

In America around 1900 liberal was the term used to describe the political philosophy most like those today called Conservatives: Support of low taxes, free trade, limited government power over individuals, free speech/press and strong property rights. Some Conservatives today call it "classical liberalism." The terms Left Wing/Right Wing get a lot of abuse too. The Nazis, for example, were the German Socialist party, and the only thing further Left than Socialists are Communists (the Nazis were so much in bed with the Soviets that the British military actually had war plans for fighting both simultaneously, as it was expected that Hitler and Stalin would be allies if war came). But the Socialists rejected the outright Marxism that they called the "Left Wing" part of the movement and described themselves as "Right Wing" by comparison, a label that mysteriously is still used to describe them to this day. But imagine grabbing a man off the street and asking him if Socialists are Left or Right. If memory serves, the term Left Wing comes from France, where the representatives who shared that philosophy all sat together on the left side. Those who disagreed with the Left Wing were lumped together as the Right Wing, although they didn't really share a common philosophy. That's more or less true today. In America, for example, the "Right Wing" includes Republicans and Libertarians, who are staunchly at odds on many major policy issues but get lumped together because they are not Left Wing. _______________ My signature is only one line.
