I recently got my new card issued to replace the expiring bank card I've had for about four years. I don't think this happens with the newer cards, but the signature on the back of the card had worn completely away, and frequently a cashier would ask to see my driver's license to compare the signature on the license with the signature on the receipt. I never thought most cashiers compared the signature on the card to the signature on the receipt but that many (not all) at least look at the back of the card to see if there's a signature there at all. If there's no signature on the back of the card they get suspicious and pay at least a little attention.

Since I got my new card, most still look at the back to verify that the signature is there, but only a few cashiers actually hold up my card and receipt side by side to see if the signatures match. I note, however, that while only a few do this, "a few" is a vast improvement over ten years ago when I never, ever saw a single cashier do it. So while we have a long way to go, I think we're starting to get it. For one thing, I suspect that any cashier who has been a victim of credit card fraud is going to check every single one.

Years ago I saw Madeleine L'Engle speak at my sister's college graduation, and she said that when she wrote checks she always signed them "Abraham Lincoln"--legibly!--and that the checks always cleared. This was years ago, mind you. I don't think it would work at my bank, but I bet it would still work at the last bank I used.
