Yeah, I've heard some crazy stuff with mmorpgs all the way back to Dragonrealms (straight text-based game). Some people let themselves get completely saturated with the games they play, so much as that it ruins their life and others lives as well. But, to argue a counterpoint, I've played plenty of MMORPGS, I've played Dragonrealms, Everquest, FFXI, CityofHeroes, and now I play Everquest 2. I know how they can be addicting (Just one more level!), but I also know a balance between game life and real life needs to be established. It's all about control, and the lack thereof of the folks in the article. _______________ Be honorable, be friendly, be trustworthy. Show respect to all whom you meet. Don't forget you learn when you win AND when you lose. Be the first to admit mistake AND the first to correct it. Be the shoulder for someone to lean on. Always remember those that sacrificed time to help you. Thank you Odan Wei, Vladarion, 3th, Moridin, n00b, Motrec, Faded, Leif, and Tido, you will not be forgotten as the ones to make you remember, it's all about fun... |

Well, the victim did wrong the guy who killed him within the game. To be sure: He borrowed a piece of digital property and sold it. There are lots of kinds of property, and not everything is a physical widget. I "own" the copyright on my writing (except what I write for my employer). Many kinds of ownership have more to do with rights, e.g. I own my house and the land it sits on, and while I can't stick it in my pocket and carry it around, I do have an exclusive right to use it. An MMO player pays for a service and has a certain right to expect that service to be provided. But to be sure: It's a role-playing game. They are playing characters. If one character borrowed something from the other and never gave it back, his character is stealing within the context of the game-world. In some MMORPGs players can kill one another's characters, so gimme a break. That he sold it for real-world money adds an interesting twist but does not change the fact that he is role-playing the part of a thief in the game world, and the appropriate punishment should be dished out to his character by the game-world constable (or the character who got robbed can get together a posse and go for frontier justice). One has to distinguish between what the player owns--the right to play his character in the game world and to have that character persist on the servers as long as he pays the fee--and what the player's character owns, which in many game worlds may be protected on by the kind of wild-west "justice" that exists in many fantasy worlds. That somebody was willing to commit murder over this, of course, suggests a truly sick mind. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

Games are just a simulation of reality, it would be beyond ridiculous to apply the laws of the real world to in-game transactions. The bottom line is that the victim got the better of the defendant in a game, the guy got pissed and killed him. No different than if someone lost at virtual poker (which uses real money), got pissed and killed the other player. It's a game, and they were foolish enough to bet real money on it. _______________ "You hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability..." |

This is just sick. Taking a game so seriously to buy (EDIT: with real money) weapons in it is nonsense. This comment was edited by Matej on Mar 30 2005 07:57pm. |
