Sides to the Force? | |
Blademaster - Student |
Does the Force really have a "Light" or "Dark" side? In one hand, there are cut-and-dry sides to the Force that are followed by the Jedi or the Sith. The Light side represents the inherent good of the Force and the Dark side represents the inherent evil. On the other hand, the Force has no sides. It is simply a power source that can be used by either a Jedi or a Sith for any purpose. With this thought, techniques like Force Drain and Force Lightning can be used for good, and Force Protect and Mind Trick can likewise be used for evil. The responsibility lies entirely with the user, not with the Force. So what do you think? Are there really "sides" to the Force? _______________ Let's race. You, me, and 5 kilometers of ground. Quote: So I guess one analogy you could use could be drugs. On the one hand, drugs can be marvelous triumphs of human engineering; curing diseases and saving lives. On the other hand drugs can also be used for some decidedly more malevolent pruposes, such as abuse, like heroin, or even poisons. The products in and of themselves aren't good or bad, but the applications can be either. Great analogy _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace. The first I ever heard of seperation of "light and dark" powers of the force was in Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. It's as if it was all made up for video game purposes. Since then it has just adapted into the culture. Basically every other game has seperated the powers and fans just come to expect that there is a difference. I've always thought of the force as neutral. You can do anything you want with it. It just depends on who, what, where, when and how that affects whether it is light or dark. But that's my opinion. _______________ "We keep odd hours...." ----------------------- They Live, We Sleep |

No. In EP5, I believe, you see yoda "grip"ing the x-wing out of the water He's not evil. Whereas the grip is under the "Dark" category in the JK games. So I think the force power does not decide wether or not you are good. It's how you use them. _______________ "The Dark Side? I've been there... You can manipulate the force in good or bad ways... but does that mean the force is good and bad? That is the question. _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace. The force has ups and downs, but the person chooses which ups and downs they are (if ya catch my drift) the force "side" is determined by how you act and what you do with the powers(thus the force is a neutral power) _______________ A Jedi shall not know Anger...nor Hate...nor Love. -Jedi Master Bandon |

The real issue, then, is whether the Force powers are the Force itself (in which case there is an evil Force and a good Force) or are they a manipulation of the Force, in which case it is not inherently good or evil. _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace. Quote: The Sith naturally choose evil, the Jedi naturally choose good. no the sith dont naturally choose evil they are corrupted by the backlash of useing the force for evil. thuse corrupting the mind and makeing those who where good to start with to belive what they are doing is the right thing. I.E. darth vader. he wanted to save all those who where wronged but then he was corrupted and turned evil. _______________ ask JP. I was the one that owned him. (Warlocks all the way) |

A Jedi says they only do defense, never to attack first or from afar ie. dishonerably. George Lucas fashioned them like Samurai, and Samurai thought it was dishonerable to attack your enemy from afar. Choke is from afar, Lightning is from afar, Throw is from afar. I've never seen a Jedi throw his lightsaber, Ive only seen vader do it and he's a Sith Lord. _______________ Free Tibet! Click this link, and learn Here too |

Interesting thought - all Force powers begin with a choice. That's really the nature of all acts, isn't it? A choice, no matter what the outcome, can be made for good or for evil. The Sith naturally choose evil, the Jedi naturally choose good. _______________ Let's race. You, me, and 5 kilometers of ground. The only question is: Do you feel fast today? |

I stand by the belief that there is just the Force. Any Jedi can use the Force to harm someone. They have that ability. So to me, the Dark Side is simply a choice. "Will I use it to help others or to benefit myself." "Will I use words to discuss the situation and come to a peaceful end? Or will I simple kill this person with the force and end it that way?" The difference between Dark Jedi and Light Jedi, other than belief, is that Light Jedi don't let their Emotions dictate the use of their force powers. I don't know what GL or the EU say about it, but KoTOR seems to suggest there are; "good" force powers are easier to use if you're light, suggesting that there's some sort of good force power you can channel more easily if you're good. The same for evil. Some might argue that a power cannot be inherently good or evil, but something like Force Wound, deliberately inflicting violent pain on a person through the force, would never be employed by a truly good force user. _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace.
