Quote: Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of speech we agree with--it means freedom of speech. There is no need even to talk about freedom of speech we all agree with because such speech could never possibly be threatened anyway. Well said. And I'm not sure what to say about the Che thing. It seems like most people who wear the Che paraphenalia only know that he was a "revolutionary." Bah. Castro may not have liked Che when he was alive, but after he died he became the perfect symbol for "La Revolucion." A symbol happily whored out to any kid (I've only seen teens/twenties wearing the shirts) who feels he/she has something to rebel against, even if it's only his/her parents. So now it's evolved to symbolize anything designated 'counter-culture'. Sheep. _______________ "It's because I love you. No. It's because I love you" Oh, Anakin, you're eloquence is second to none. What's sad is that the mother is totally screwing over her baby. She's blaming the baby for her action of putting up a nazy flag. How pathetic is that? If the baby liked the colors, she could've easily had one inside the house where there is a privacy, and also easily substitue the nazi flag for other flags with similiar colors. |

Quote: They should burn that flag IMO. The flag's owner should not have been flying it, but remember it is her property. Offensive as it may be, she should certainly have a right to fly a flag on her own property. If she really didn't know what it meant (I'm skeptical of her claim not to have known), then I suspect a sit-down conversation with a survivor or child of a survivor of a concentration camp would set her straight rather quickly. But even if it didn't, it's her property. Similar things happen here in America without any fuss. Hardly a day goes by that I don't see a kid wearing a T-shirt with a picture of mass murderer Che Guevera. These are deeply offensive to Cuban Americans, especially those who had friends and relatives tortured and murdered by Guevera and his fellow travelers, but I don't see anybody calling for the T-shirts to be burned. I'd certainly never patronize a store that sells them, though. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of speech we agree with--it means freedom of speech. There is no need even to talk about freedom of speech we all agree with because such speech could never possibly be threatened anyway. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I don't care to differentiate them, because they're perfect examples of how a country wanting to be communist most likely ends up. I'm all for communism, when it works. China is the most poppulated country in the world, and yet they poppulate so much that they had to invade 5 other countries and take them over with brutal violance, including Tibet. After defeating the small Tibetan army and occupying half the country, the Chinese government imposed the so-called "17-Point Agreement for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet" on the Tibetan government in May 1951. Liberation? more like the torture and imprisonment of peaceful Bhuddist Monks. 1.2 million Tibetans have lost their lives, (over one-sixth of the population) as a result of the Chinese occupation AND even after invading and taking over numerous countries they still are crowded. Communist Dictators using fear, what gives them the right? Well Mao said..."My right comes out of the barrel of my gun" its a shame _______________ Free Tibet! Quote: Last time I checked, Italy wasn't communist... Italy is a democracy, however it has had for the better part of the last century a successful and popular communist party. In fact it's hard to walk through some Italian cities without seeing red hammer/sickles spray painted on walls. As for China and North Korea. Yeah, they're about as communist as the soviets were. That is to say not very much, if at all. Hence my earlier satement: oligarchies more oppressive to the proletariat than the bourgiosie it villifies. As for Cuba, I haven't really been paying attention to them, so I can't really say for certain. However I know that it's a pretty destitute country in which Fidel lives pretty well, so I'm inclined to lump it in with the above. Yeah the 'removal' of opposition via secret police was never a principal laid down by Marx or Engels, so I'm loathe to consider them communist nations. And you're right to a degree, Quote: communism is good in theory, but it just doesn't work in real life. It can work, just not on it's own. It can work as a part of a larger system, as it is used in Italy, and France, and a few other European nations (Italy just happens to be one of the more successful which is why I cited it.) Quote: They're not as bad as the Soviet Union Actually, I'd have to disagree, at least where China's concerned. China is undoubtedly more brutal to "enemies of the party" than the USSR was. The Soviets sent people to penal colonies in Siberia to die, China on the other hand, utilizes a veritable cornicopia of horrific torture techniques to inspire loyalty through fear, not unlike the Death Star. Except that I think being blown up on your planet would be far more merciful than, say having bamboo shoots inserted under your fingernails. But the worst part? China is the single largest trading partner to the US. They make somewhere in the realm of 13 Billion dollars a year from the US, mostly because so much of the stuff we buy here in the good ol' US of A is made by political prisoners in China. The US is actually paying China to torture people. (As a sidenote my mother was actually a foreign coorespondent for the Financial Times in the 70's covering torture cases, not a good time.) Most people don't bother to differentiate Communism, as outline in the 19th century by Marx and Engels, from Maoism, Stalinism, or Leninism. Last time I checked, Italy wasn't communist... And yeah, communism is good in theory, but it just doesn't work in real life. There aren't "lots of places, where it works". Would you say China, Cuba and North Korea are outstanding countries? They're not as bad as the Soviet Union - which, I know, wasn't real communism - but that doesn't mean it's a great way to run a country, in reality. The truth is that communism will always fail, because of the people running it. And still, no Soviet logos are banned. |

Quote: And yeah, [Nazism] relied heavily on the killing thing in the 40s, yeah, but I don't see communist logos banned... That may be in part due to the fact that communisms basic tenets have more to do with social equality then racial superiority. Don't confuse the Soviet Union with a communist government. Because it wasn't really that into 'communism.' It could be seen as simply a massive demonstration on how Marx's fragile vision of an egalitarian utopia can be twisted into an oligarchy more oppressive to the proletariat than the bourgeoisie it villifies. Besides, communism is a legitimate form of government that works very well in many places. Take Italy for example. But them nazis is just bad news. Fo' reelzy. _______________ "It's because I love you. No. It's because I love you" Oh, Anakin, you're eloquence is second to none. I AM THE OPIATE OF THE MASSES! |

No, national socialism isn't "all about that". Even though neo-nazis tend to be violent, that doesn't mean you should punish the whole ideology. And yeah, it relied heavily on the killing thing in the 40s, yeah, but I don't see communist logos banned... PS: Grad, yeah, as I said, she has the RIGHT.
