it was put to my attention recently that if you have a better graphics card, you can play much better and thus get a better rank. I can barly run this game with my 400 mhz pentium celeron and nvida riva 128, and i have only won about ten duels.so my question is what kind of graphics cards do you guys have (because i want to see if my theory is correct)

anything from 60fps and up is just fine. Everything below will make it "lag" a little. The lower fps, the more fps-lag.
Your eye can see 33.333333 fps, so why have more? Because of some weird reason, you can feel it. So even though your fps is constantly 33.33333 fps, you will still experience a bit of lag.

For my self, I'm running:
700@900mhz Duron
384 sdram pc 133 (rate: 2,3,2,3)
GeForce 2 gts 32mb
win2k + refreshrate fix
and I have about 15-30 fps on the academy map (less fps on other maps), with mIRC, openoffice tray, and winamp running in the background, and every graphic detail at minimum in 640x480 16bit.
This is how my autoexec.cfg looks like:
cg_drawFPS 1
cg_drawTimer 1
r_colorbits 16
r_detailtextures 0
r_dynamiclight 0
r_picmip 3
vid_restart
cg_brassTime 0
cg_drawRewards 1
cg_marks 0
cg_shadows 0

It's an old Q3 cfg, that dosen't tweak alot, but dosen't drop the fps when more people are entering the room (5 persons in a room dosen't make much more lag).

-edit-
forgot to mention, that OFCOURSE FPS DOES COUNT!

allright. Now to convince my dad to lend me some more money, what other benefits does it make? IE, does it help the computer go faster? etc.?

Runs at around 30-40 FPS on the VERY LOW detail setting, so on most of the default maps it's smooth. But then again... I don't really know what smooth is until I see JK2 on my friend's computer.

Well you do have to realize that we are all different, and he is an animator so that means he'd be using the cartoon show frame rate. There are probably some people that can see 35 and others that can only see 25.

I was told that people can't see above 60 fps, but 30 fps is yur average TV cartoon.

yeah above 30 fps you cannot distinguish between frames any longer so it looks like one smooth "motion picture" ;)

Just a little side note. I've got a friend in college for animation and I was mentioning some things to him about framerate. Apparently the human eye can only see 30 frames per second. I don't really know how well it translates into the game framerates though, I do notice skips occasionally though on mine when its at 20 fps though and much fewer when it holds at 30

I have a 500 mHz iMac with an old 8 meg ATI card, and it runs fine on my comp.

I have almost everything set to medium, and I get descent framerates.

I run at 1024/768 Full detail in JO, and usually rank in at 45 FPS, which is beyond film quality. So I honestly can't tell you exactly what framerate you should be getting. Mine is good, especially considering my video and RAM. Other people with similar systems seem to be running way low for some reason.
