Deep Throat, the infamous anonymous informer from the Watergate fiasco back in the '70's, is now revealed as a Mr. W. Mark Felt.

GO!

(First two paragraphs)

"Vanity Fair's big scoop almost didn't happen. It started with a cold call two years ago from John D. O'Connor, a prominent lawyer in the San Francisco Bay area, to the magazine's editor, Graydon Carter. O'Connor, according to David Friend, an editor at the magazine, said he had a client "who is Deep Throat, and he wants to come out in the pages of Vanity Fair."

And so began the drama that led to Vanity Fair's revelation yesterday that former FBI official W. Mark Felt was journalist Bob Woodward's famed anonymous source on the Watergate scandal. Woodward's subsequent confirmation filled in what former Post executive editor Ben Bradlee yesterday called "the last act, the last unknown fact" about the events that led to the downfall of President Richard Nixon."

I'm still skeptical.

At first Woodward and Bernstein would not confirm it, which really left me scratching my head. For 30 years they've been milking this story saying they won't reveal his identity because Deep Throat wished it to remain secret until his death...and then when Deep Throat supposedly changed those wishes and came public, they wouldn't confirm?

Over the years, various people studying the matter have said that, notwithstanding W&B's insistence to the contrary, Deep Throat has to be a composite of several sources because it is unlikely that any one source could have given them everything Deep Throat gave them. When they finally did confirm, note the weasle words W&B used:

Quote:
"W. Mark Felt was 'Deep Throat' and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage. However, as the record shows, many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in The Washington Post about Watergate."

Read between the lines: Deep Throat was a composite; there really was no Deep Throat.

That they wouldn't confirm it at first really sent my BS-ometer into the red. If he really were Deep Throat, it would make no sense for them not to confirm it.

I have no doubt that Felt believes he was Deep Throat, but I have a sort of picture in my mind of W&B talking it over that afternoon: "Mark Felt, Deep Throat? Well, that one never ocurred to me, but, uh, sure, why not? It will spare us having to answer any more questions about it."

One thing I foresee happening is the blogs conducting an extensive analysis of Felt's whereabouts on all the dates that they supposedly met with Deep Throat. Over the years most theories of who Deep Throat might be have been debunked on the basis of such analysis. Time will tell.

Best headline to come out of this: MARK FELT DEEP THROAT.
