Any Kendo/Iaido students out there? | |

My interest in sword fighting has been rekindled, so I've been poking around for a real-life outlet. I was wondering, does anyone here attend regular Kendo or Iaido classes? Those seem the most interesting to me at the moment. Unfortunately, being as far in the boondocks as I am, it's very unlikely I'll be able to attend any classes at a dojo. For that reason, I have a couple more questions! 1) Does anyone know of any good books or videos about Kendo or Iaido? Anything instructional would be interesting. (I'm not much into the philosophy aspects of the arts at the moment.) 2) Has anyone tried something a little more "Western"? Fencing has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but it IS interesting in that it's a form of swordsmanship. Failing that, perhaps someone knows of a European/Medieval form of swordsmanship? Currently the closest I have to experience with a sword is boffer sword fighting using PVC pipe and pipe foam. While that's a fun game, it really doesn't teach as much as I'd like about swordsmanship and tends to degenerate into beating the crap out of one another with pipes. With a bit of instruction in some sword art or another, I think some of my friends and I would find the boffer version much more entertaining/rewarding. How about everyone else? Any real life sword enthusiasts out there? |

Ju-Jitsu can teach you a little about fighting with Katans and wakazashies but the training dosent go to deep into it as Ju-Jitsu is mainly self defence so uses throws, locks and holds. I dont know where you can get a book on Ju-Jitsu that looks at sword play but if you do find one you can learn alot about sword fighting. ![]() _______________ "Aa’ lasser en lle coia orn n' omenta gurtha" "May the leaves of your life tree never turn brown" |

But isn't that partly because he is your dad and he knows how you are and how to reach you and stuff? Anyway, it sucks you've got this distance to overcome but I know there are some online fora and site which will give you a lot of info ... I can't find a link currently though. _______________ -Nero Quote: Curious, Smartass, what else? |

If you do decide to go to classes in anything, I recommend looking for small, privately owned classes with well-certified instructors rather than big nation-wide chains. Just on principle. My dad teaches karate in his spare time, having spent 8 years in Japan learning it, and I have taken classes both with him and at Canada's Best Karate and can guarantee that his are better. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. |

To clarify, I did not mean I intend to gloss over the philosophy of the arts entirely, just that I'm not interested in learning it exclusively. (Since books on such matters are much easier to come across than teachers of the art.) |

Well I wouldn't want you swinging around real swords if your not interested in the whole art or philosphy of it. I do Tae Kwon Do, the way of the foot & fist. I don't think my schools instructor does weapons, I'm not even sure if any TKD school does weapons because Tae = foot, Kwon = hand, Do = art or way, but I have seen a nun-chucks class a few years ago, but I don't see it now. We get suited up in a hogus, head gear, and some forearm and shin guards, and we go all out. the rounds last only a few minutes, but when you have two people who can land some well placed kicks, it can definatly knock you back, or knock the breath out of you. Just try and find some video of two black belts sparring, man they go of like fire-crackers, bahbah bahbahbhabahabah! ![]() _______________ Free Tibet! Yea, I'm not too keen on the idea of trying to teach myself anything because I simply don't learn that way. I need a solid base off which I can mimic a technique, then repeat it to death. I seem to have trouble interpreting directions when I can't ask questions. Too bad, too bad. Any instructors for any of this are 60 miles or more away. I guess boffer is my only outlet at this time. ![]() |

Saber fencing isn't just poking around. It involves slashes and stuff and while it is a point I guess there might be a degree of practicality to it as well. Problem is you'll have a hard time learning anything without an actual instructor. _______________ © |

I hadn't considered there might be a different form of fencing... Mostly you just see the two guys with wibbly foils. The idea of using some semblance of a sword to fence is intriguing. Thanks for the tip, tarpman. ![]() The movie battles thing looks kind of interesting, but to be honest, I'd rather not need to coordinate the fight beforehand. Maybe it's a competitive part of me (Which I thought was beaten out a long time ago), but I like for it to be a dynamic win or lose kind of thing. You never know how fast you can react until you're about to be bludgeoned by a pipe! Keep 'em coming guys! |

NFF - If standard foil fencing isn't quite up your alley, you might want to try saber fencing. Despite being based on the same ideas, it's a significantly different way of fighting. Also it has the word "saber" in its name. ![]() _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. |

Learning some sort of Jedi style sword fighting would be fun to show off with, but a fencer probably could whoop the pants off anyone using it in a real duel. ![]() Edit. I'm actually surprised they didn't have any fencing in the movies at all. It would be alot like the blue stance, but with more jabs and thrusts. Fast paced saber combat with alot of sparks and flash. I think the fans might enjoy it. ![]() _______________ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
