Something I hadn't realized until it was pointed out to me this morning: 113 flights, 14 deaths. The space shuttle's track record is therefore one corpse per eight flights. Imagine a product made by private industry having a similar track record and the lawyers still allowing it to be marketed.

(It also costs ~$500 million/flight.)

Um, a space shuttle is not a "product". The astronauts who put their lives at risk do so willingly and get paid for it. It's not like they are consumers of a faulty product or service. Even with a lower chance of survival, I would do it any day. And twice on sundays!

bono, we already can separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. Its just not that energy efficient. It take more energy to separate it than the energy the formation of water creates. Trees don't form hydrogen either. All they do is break up carbon dioxide and use the carbon for their hydrocarbon chains. Trees only release oxygen.
Yes yes I know, but if you developed an energy efficent way and no the tree wer supose to be used, so that when you breathed in the oxygen and breather it out again you could get it back so that you wuold have the same amount of oxygen you had before, The hydrogen supply that you recycle you just bring in your self. And they are already developing more and mroe efficent ways of producing energy from the formation of water, now if you could research and come up with effective ways to seperate the oxygen and the water, then wah lah! you have a positive system. (anyone wanna here my molecule controling idea rant?)

I'd expect a few deaths if we were strapping humans onto the back of large rockets and firing them off into space on the back of a controlled explosion. Thats fine with me. Astronauts know the risks. I say send more and keep sending until we perfect the process. Space is awesome.

I doubt we'll even be around for that Kenyon. From the little knowledge we have, we can assume that eventually every species runs into something it can't adapt fast enough to live through.

Actauly man kind should be putting more into underwater techonologies, there is so much we still don't know about our own planet and alot of it is underwater. Also its more praticly, if you can develop underwater stations that filters water into hydrogen gas and oxygen, where youy would use the hydrogen for heating and power (like those hydrogen cars developed) and then you would also then have your oxygen source. Then you woudl have tree in the under water plant that would take your Carbon dioxide, turn it into oxygen again, then the hydrogen fuel base that requres oxygen, after being used will eqaul water + energy product. ( yes the hydrogen cars have water coming out of their tail pipes) Then you could re use the water and repeat the process, it would be vital to have trees in there though, otherwise you wouldnt be able to keep recycling the same oxygen and hydrogen to have on going energy and breathing air. I don't know about you, but I think that would be a perfect underwater station if they pulled it off right.

Space is really interesting to me, but also very frustrating. Simply because it is so big. It would take years and years and years to get anywhere in our galaxy. I can be pretty confident that our kind won't be making explorations into other segments of our galaxy in my lifetime. It's like knowing there is going to be an awesome party but you gotta leave town before it starts :(.

Space and stuff has always made me wonder...why are we here, of the millions and billions of stars and planets that reside in these galaxies. What is our purpose as the supposed sole survivors of this Sun system? Is there life on other systems? Only time will tell...

Anyways, if I had a chance to go on a space shuttle ride to space, I'd take it also.

And despite that, if I ever got the chance to go, I would. And then if I ever got the chance to go again, I would :P.

Man kind should be putting alot more into space technologies. Think of the resources in our System alone. But I guess funding Wars, Terrorism, Corupt Business Giants and such are more important ATM:(
