You know what I never understood about the entire Trilogy.
According to the Expanded Universe Tarkin already proposes to build the Death Star to Sienar three years after the death of Qui-Gon.
(Source: Rogue Planet, by Greg Bear)

At the end of ROTS there is already a small part made of the Death Star (as seen in the last scene showing Darth Vader). 20 years later, the thing has just been finished.
So about 32 years to create the Death Star.

And yet, how many years are between ANH and ROTJ. Not even half, I thought.
How did they create another one, with a better design (which also must have taken time) in that time?

There was also the discussion that includes "This station is now the ultimate power in the galaxy..." so its likely it was just recently completed or there was some other incredibly powerful superweapon out there.

oh that's easy

Right before the decision falls to destroy Alderaan, one of the Imperial dudes says to Tarkin: "Final check is complete. All systems are operational."

Well, another thing, The first 12 years were just finding a spot for it and planning it, since they just started at the end of ROTS. So really it was only 20 years to build. BUT, who ever said that they had just finished the death star in ANH?

That's what happens when you bring the expanded universe into account. They don't line up. Just stick with what the movies tell you.

*edit* You know what I dont get, if it took them 32 years to build the Death Star then wouldnt it be intellegent to make it absoultly perfect with no possiable weakness what so ever, and yet they leave a hole open for someone to blow it up?

You're forgetting that these are American movies, therefore the good side has to win somehow.

That, and also the fact that the second Death Star was to be designed without the flaws of the first, which the Rebels managed to exploit at the Battle of Yavin. Should it have been completed, no starfighter would have been able to penetrate it the same way. Sure there may have been another way to defeat it, but the Rebels would have a hard time finding a way.

Maybe it's like processors. In like 2 years they went from lousy 500MHz to pretty affordable 3GHz processors. Technology flies, Once you know how to build it, it takes less time to repeat the process. Just a thought. Remember though, Star Wars = (science?) fantasy NOT science fiction. GL does just make junk up.

The EU version of the Death Star creation is a convoluted twisting idea full of much more serious repercussions than what is shown in the movies.

EU version, Tarkin takes a group of omwati children, blue skinned humanoids, and runs them through extreme testing in a star destroyer over their city. Anytime a child fails Tarkin would incinerate their city. The one child to pass was Qwi Xux. She was the designer of the Death Star. A young kid with no real concept of what she was doing, just solving scientific problems. Bevel Lemelisk was her overseer and perfected the design. All of this was done in the Maw Installation. A prototype deathstar was built there, in a state like the one you see in ROTS. This was all done under the Emperor's nose. Tarkin had aspirations to become emperor himself. The emperor found out and Tarkin needed to let him in on the plan. So Lemelisk is brought out of the maw to oversee the full construction of the actual death star. Qwi Xux remained at the maw and built the designs for the world devastators, and also the sun crusher.

In an EU book I read (I forget which one)the death star you see in ANH is not the first just the first complete one, there was atleast one other that did not get much further than the one in ROTS. So the one in ANH was probably just a prototype out for a test run.:)

And according to another EU novel, the Death Star was invented in the Maw installation by some scientists. I've long since given up any hope of a consistant Death Star.
