Since this seems to be such a hot topic, I decided to make it its own thread. Please keep it civil guys, and don't attack people for their personal beliefs, just like all the religious ones, this is a place to debate peacefully.

I enjoyed reading your post.

Alot of people where I live in NY are upset that our troops are over there still. I had a politics class and we debated over this whole thing for a while. Me personally, im glad we did what we did, but then again I have no family over there so its hard to say :D

It has been said many times that War itself is Terror, so a War against Terror is impossible. Many people believe that it should end, simply because it is a war.
I do not agree.

Please don't accuse me of not caring for the soldiers currently in Iraq, or those who will get shipped out in the near future. I have the uttermost respect for all of them.

First of all, let's look at the results of this war.

When fighting in Afghanistan, we have knocked the Taliban senseless, and took the rule of Afghanistan from their hands. Not our place to do so? I quote:
Quote:
The Taliban prevented women from working and sharply restricted the education of girls. In some cases, women were denied hospital treatment to prevent their exposure to male hospital staffers and doctors.

Source: Wikipedia.
another nice quote:
Quote:
Women were also banned from going in public unless wearing face-covering burqas, a cultural and religious taboo in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and a few other societies.

Source: Wikipedia.

Reason enough to overthrow the Taliban? Of course not, just because you're a sexist does not mean you should be thrown in jail.

Now this:
Quote:
Women were forced to cover up in a burqa when in public and to wear shoes that did not make noise. Violations of such laws brought on a public caning. Also, if a house had a woman inhabitant, the front windows of that house had to be painted over.

now we're getting somewhere.

Throw in the fact that they were harbouring Bin Laden (they admitted the fact that he was in Afghanistan, and they would turn him over to another Islamic Country for Islamic Trial) and this war suddenly becomes very justifiable. We went after a terrorist who caused the ends of 2986 lives, which was more than the 2403 casualties at Pearl Harbor. The Taliban wouldn't release Osama to the Western World, so we (Allies of America + America itself) attacked the Taliban, and removed them from office. But we did not find Osama Bin Laden.

Right now, the current situation in Afghanistan has improved. Women have rights, they do not have to fear the streets if they walk out with shoes that make noise. They do not have to fear being caned in public if they do something wrong. They can go to the same hospitals as men, they can have their own job (and not just in healthcare, as it was under the Taliban). Things have improved for them. They now have their own first President.

The War continued with Iraq. Whether or not there really were Weapons of Mass Destruction, we might never know, but keep in mind the fact that we did remove both Saddam Hussein and his two sons.
Why they had to be removed?
Well, the reasons for removing Uday, Saddam's first son, are obvious.
Quote from Wikipedia:

Quote:
#1 As head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, Uday oversaw the imprisonment and torture of Iraqi athletes who were deemed not to have performed to expectations. According to widespread reports, torturers beat and caned the soles of the soccer players' feet. The experience is intensely painful, but leaves no marks on the rest of the body.
#2 A former Uday look-alike who had served in the past as a body double, now living in the West, claimed that Uday was unable to perform sexually without causing pain and drawing blood from his sexual partners. The double said that Uday had raped numerous women, including a visiting Russian ballerina.

Not a nice fellow. So it's obvious that Iraq would be better of without their future dictator. Just imagine what would happen if he ever became Ruler of Iraq.

The reasons for bringing Saddam down are obvious.
Of course the main reason was the development of WMD's. I'm talking about anthrax, and nerve gas and nuclear weapons. The anthrax-letters anyone?
I didn't seem to read anything on Wikipedia about the mass-graves uncovered in Iraq, but of course, they are also a reason.
You can say the US lied about WMD's, and you can say they just wanted Saddam to be removed, but you can't say they lied about the mass-graves. Pictures and videos are plentiful, I even saw some on the news when they were first uncovered.

Iraq was better of with us removing him from office.

Of course, I can be wrong about any of these things as I'm not an American and therefore couldn't follow the American news as much as real Americans could. If I have made any errors, please let me know.
Feel free to discuss everything (or just one thing) with me :) I've always been a big fan of discussions and debates.
