CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - On the eve of NASA's return to flight, a falling window cover dinged a couple of tiles on the shuttle Discovery

Quote:
Less than two hours after NASA Administrator Mike Griffin declared that Discovery was "go for launch," engineers at the launch pad discovered that a foam-edged, plastic cover had come off one of the cockpit windows, fell 60 feet (18 meters) and hit a protruding engine pod on the left side of Discovery's back end.

Quote:
although the replacement was slightly out of alignment with the surrounding tiles, inspectors gave the OK for launch.

I mean, come on!, can't they atleast secure the stupid plastic thing first!? idiots will make the same mistake again like last time if they don't do their job.

If they're smart, they postpone the launch.

The similarity lies only in the fact that it both has something to do with the
warmth-resisting tiles. Those tiles are worldwide the only possible mater to
be able to withstand such heats, problem is that it is very fragile aswell.
At nearly every launch a few tiles break off and this is considered
normal and not dangerous, when the accident occur a couple of tiles came
loose on a very vurnerable place, the chance of those getting loose again
is extremely slim...

You know I really doubt that NASA, would let the same thing happen again. I don't think they've ever had a similar accident ever occur twice. Isn't also part of this mission to test the repairing of the space shuttle in orbit? And also I don't believe that the shuttle is exposed to the same temperatures on the trip up as the return, which is why columbia was destroyed on its return and not during the liftoff.

If you want to know what happened last time, to the shuttle Columbia, this is it...

Quote:
Investigators concluded that Columbia's left wing was hit by a piece of flying foam insulation from the external fuel tank, opening up a hole in the left wing. Sixteen days later, during atmospheric re-entry, hot gases entered that hole and thus causing the shuttle to break apart, and insinerate, destroying the shuttle from within.

That tragedy killed all seven of Columbia's astronauts and brought the rest of the shuttle fleet to a standstill while NASA and an independent panel investigated the accident's cause.

The shuttles, and the shuttles computers are so old and out of date, from like the 50's, where the computer is the size of a house practicly!. Everything is so fragile a peice of foam can smash a hole straight through it.

Let's hope your right Grad.

Well, although I agree that it appears to be another mistake, NASA is full of some of the worlds smartest people. I have the upmost faith that any problems would've been fixed before they declared it a Go.
