There was an article from anandtech that blasted the Xbox360 and PS3. Both processors contain in-order processing which is a HUGE performance hit for games. I'll put it this way..the last CPU to have that was the 8x86 series from Intel so no one uses it anymore ![]() The 10MB DRAM for the xbox360 is for the GPU mainly for texures since they tend to be bigger than geometry. ANd from what I've read xbox360 will have backwards compatibility via emulation software it has to run and nvidia will get kickbacks on xbox sales because of it. The CPU. so its only 3.2ghz that is still damned fast. Its also about cost efficiency. No one will buy a 1000 dollar console system if its specs are 3 5.6GHZ CPUS with 2GBS of system ram and custome SLI 7800 GTX with 512 Video Ram. Console advantage: non changing development platform for 5 years. So you don't have to make sure your game runs good on 2-3 generation old GPUs. _______________ When a Man lies he murder's some part of the world. It is Microsoft, who knows what background programs they'll have installed on the x-box. I also doubt that they've learned their lesson and this will again be able to be modified so that people can just go and download games again directly onto their hard drives cutting into sales. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. The triple core is pointless. Dual cores are used to prevent time slices allocated to each program from clashing, allowing a computer running more than one program at a time to run much more quickly and smoothly by allocating them time slices on different cores. The X-Box will only be running one program: the game. There won't BE any other programs for clashing, you may as well have one core. _______________ -Kauyon Draconis [Official master of Ataris] |

Quote: Ok, 3.2Ghz processor? That's not exactly way ahead of available computer processors, and since the machine will only ever be running one program at a time, why does it need 3 cores? how may ppl you know run dual processors on their gaming rigs? not many eh? how many run 3 processors? probably none. the xbox 360 will be able to crunch data like nobody's business (meaning more polygons, more physics calculations, etc.) you want high detail, complex environment games? you gotta be able to deal with all that data. i imagine for the next year after it's released it will be well above the average pc gaming rig. intel is currently rolling out dual core processors for it's pentium 4 line. wonder how long before they reach triple core? _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! I've also just been informed that the X-Box 360 will not include proper 'backwards-compatibility'. A vague description of what they intend to do.. is re-release the old games with compatibilty for the 360. I don't know if this is true or not, I doubt it. *edit* ah, here we go. Quote: The problem with backwards compatibility is that the original Xbox ran on an nVIDIA graphics processor. When software makes calls to a chipset to produce visuals it uses code specific to that hardware. Xbox 360 runs on an ATI graphics chip meaning that code from last generation games will need to be recompiled or emulated in order to work on the system. Does this mean that consumers will have to chuck their beloved Xbox libraries? Not necessarily. There is a chance that Xbox 360 will have the ability to emulate the old system, though nothing has been announced as of yet. _______________ -Kauyon Draconis [Official master of Ataris] This comment was edited by Esta on Jul 15 2005 05:50pm. |

I still don't get the hype about this. Most of the games available for X-box will be brought out for pc too... Graphics-wise, well.. Quote: # 3.2 GHz PowerPC processor with 3 cores # ATI custom graphics chip # 512MB GDDR3 Unified System Memory # 10MB embedded DRAM Ok, 3.2Ghz processor? That's not exactly way ahead of available computer processors, and since the machine will only ever be running one program at a time, why does it need 3 cores? The ATI graphics chip? .. It's ATI NVIDIA > ATI. You can already buy NVIDIA graphics cards that'll hugely out-power this thing. 512MB GDDR3? Ok, I'll admit that beats everything else, mainly because nobody ever needs that amount. 10MB embedded DRAM.... why would you ever need that much? Think people, think! PS3 to win IMO.
