I started playing JK with JK3/Jedi Academy. I have heard that the previous games are good...but not sure if I want to go back to the very beginning, as I remember my friend used to play Dark Forces...and that was just a shoot em up game. With that ticked (and I thought it was by default) the camera auto-switches to 3rd person whenever you get the saber out, and back to 1st when you get guns out again.JK is a really wonderful game, with brilliant level design. In this respect first and foremost it is better than both JO and JA. The guns in JK also pwn those of the rest of the series, they're just a lot more fun to use imo. That makes a really big difference. In JK, the first few levels where you don't have a saber are a joy to play, in JO they are a chore. I also prefer the storyline and the way in which you make your dark/lightside choice (and the storyline that develops from that choice). The lightsaber is certainly not as good, but I still consider it fairly respectable. It is still possible to pwn utterly in a multiplayer game using the saber alone, but you have to be really quite 1337 . There is a lot to learn about JK1's saber, but I'll agree it's not as good as JK2's. However, because JK's guns work better generally the saber is a generally best used as part of a combined armoury which makes the gameplay nicely varied. JK2 also has some streamlining/improvement of the interface in some ways, for example force jump is a lot more intuitive in JK2. However, I think JO being in the quake 3 engine (actually, come to think of it other modern engines might have been just as bad) is a downside in a few ways. For one thing, there are no dynamic lights in JO and only half-hearted ones in JA. So you can't use your saber to light up dark areas a little. I really missed that in JO. This is made worse because you can't have ANY form of portable light, the only option is to use irritating IR goggles which obviously can't function in 3rd-person mode. It also generally looks visually wrong. To me, gunshots, from lasers/rockets/whatever should create light on impact at least, if not while travelling as well.Maybe JK's greatest strength lies in its editing community. It was blessed with a lot of dedicated and talented people. An excellent user-made level editor (actually a fair bit better than the one the developers of the game used) was harnessed to the full by some really great modders and level makers. There are many great levels out there. I'm particularly a fan of single player levels, and two particularly good ones (there are many oher excellent examples too) are "Birth of a Mercenary: Special Edition" (BoaM: SE) and "The New Empire Part 1: Special Edition" (TNE1 SE). Maybe its just me but i like jk3 far more then jk2. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces owns, the story is so good! the cutscenes are with real people! Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast is the best of all, they did it so perfect, they even took pictures of real stuff so the textures/skins look better. It took serius skill to be able to win in this game. As I recall, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight is where you first get to use a light saber. But if I remember correctly, it's only from a first person view.
