Another reason the saber is hard to control is because of the gyroscopic force it creates when moved. This is evident, for example, when Yoda draws his saber, and he appears to flourish it, twisting it with his wrist. This is actually just a way to compensate for the gyroscopic force that the lightsaber creates. So when Yoda draws the saber, he twirls it around a bit to get his senses used to the gyroscopic force of the saber. when the Jedi first formed up blasters were somewhat of a novelty and melee weapons were most common, the "laser sword" already existed but was very difficult for a normal sentient to use since the blade had no weight it was very difficult to accurately judge the location of the blade while the hilt was in motion. The need arose from the Jedi having to defend themselves from the forces of evil throughout the galaxy. Being beacons of light and honor the forces of evil were naturally drawn to them. (a positive charge always seeks a negative charge, the north pole of a magnet is drawn to the south pole, etc) As the forces of evil attacked they quickly learned that lightsaber was not to be trifled with and that in the hands of a Jedi the saber is to be feared. Blasters and melee weapons alike are useless against it. Since the force allows the Jedi to really bond with his saber his need of comes from more than just self-defense it does indeed become the Jedi's friend and only posession. Teh saber was then refined and used by the Jedi who could, through the force, ultimately control the blade flawlessly. It is commonly believed that energy is "alive", being alive the Jedi could bond with it. Early lightsaber energy cells were made from the flesh of living creatures. This is how the the Jedi can just will the saber to power on, he/she can feel the energy within the hilt and command it. Well the first Jedi used speacial swords in the begining. A lightsaber is a Jedi's weapon. It's a symbol of all he's accomplished through his training (as it's creation is a mandatory part of becoming a knight), so it's only reasonable that they carry them. _______________ The first step to knowing everything is knowing that you know nothing. Well, drastically outnumbered any Jedi will get shot regardless...but an accurate evasive marksman can take out lots of enemies from a distance...so why can't that be a Jedi...they'd be better gun slingers, right? In order to sword fight, you have to get close. Exposing yourself, yet enabling deadly blows up close. Also...
