I was thinking back to the last fights between Obi vs. Aninkin and Yoda vs. Sidious. Doesnt anyone else think these fights are point less, they both end in a stalemate because noone dies?

I personally did not like the Sidious vs Yoda fight. In the book, Yoda gets pwned quite a bit more. Yoda learns his big flaw: they've never adapted their ways over 900 years. They've done the same approach for 900 years, while the Sith learn new tricks, and finally hand the Jedi their asses.

Yoda doesn't deflect things back, he doesn't put up an even fight against Sidious.

And....

He doesn't fall. He JUMPS. To get his green butt OUTTA THERE before he gets killed. So that he can leave to bring about A NEW HOPE for Jedi.

This is why he is so torn with Luke, between seeing grav danger and grave hope.

Luke doesn't fight like the old Jedi, Luke fights with passion, not with rigid traditions and rigid trainings. This is how Luke can win. Yoda and Obi-Wan were stict to the same teachings the Jedi have done for 900 years. And Yoda gets pwned.

The movie does NOTHING to portray this. No, they would rather entertain the kiddies by showing Yoda dominate. This removes a great point just so Mr. Lucas can sell more tickets.

Yoda was supposed to get pwned. Instead it looks like an even match, and so many good points are lost. I would have really liked to see Yoda JUMP. Sidious never was supposed to FALL either, but guess Lucas doesn't feel like telling a good story at all.

I must agree
In my opinion, only one of the fights became semi stalemate. That would be Yoda vs. Sideous. But Obi -Wan vs. Anakin had a clear victor, Obi-Wan. He walked away while Anakin...couldn't...walk...:p
Anywho,
That fight proved to be a major plot element for the following episodes.
So see??? they were'nt pointless at all.

i don't think these fights are pointless... without the outcome of the obi vs anakin fight there would not of been the same Tortured Darth Vader to strike fear into the people of the galaxy ('darth vader' would of existed but not in the same way...)

Without the Yoda vs Sidious fight Yoda may not of realised the need for change and possibly wouldn't of set obi-wan and luke down the paths he did. Also he may not of exiled himself to Dagobah.

who knows what else would of been affected they are very important in the overal saga imho.

Dachande,

You said you've trained swordfighting, not lightsaberuseage.. :D Besides, if your training spoils a movie for you, you don't have to spoil it for us.. I for my part couldn't care less if the saberfighting looks 'uneffective', but I wouldn't want someone to point it out like you did, and ruin that movie for me if I ever want to watch it again.. Now when I watch it, everytime when the scene you speak of pops on the screen, I remember this discussion and can't enjoy the visually satisfying bout..

Well, this is what i didnt understand.
The first time i watched the movie... it didnt look as if Yoda had actually lost. Sure, he fell like, over 10 stories. But good ol palpy was hanging on, with one hand, swinging around.. while Yoda was getting up and running away. Hell, if i was able to get up and run away, id use my good little force, pick up one of those chairs, and whip it at palpy.

Now Obi vs Ani... Friendship in flames! At the end of that... Obi Wan could have (read Should have) used the force to throw ani into the lava. To finish him off.

Oh, and we have to figure out why vader gets a new saber: obi took his.
cant remember what else i was gonna say...

something about swordfighting...
ah well. i forget

I think that your sense of realism is not necessarily what would be realistic in that universe or galaxy or time or whatever. So it is somewhat unrealistic to contend that it's unrealistic. Or something along those lines :P

None of us are jedi and none of us really know much about fighting with lightsabers and what exact role that things like force powers and saber feints have in fights. Just because they don't hit or wouldn't have hit doesn't mean they don't have a purpose.

And the original trilogy movies are not classics for the "realistic" saber fights. IMHO the saber fight in ANH is kinda lame (yeah it was cool when I was 7). They are classics because of the fantasy elements (space ships, The Force, etc.) and the typical good triumphing over evil story.

My $0.02.

I know why their classics...itz because of the fantasy and spacechips and all what you said...i was replyin to one of the guyz who said the movies would suck if the sword fights werent all flashy...I was tryin to make th epoint that just because you dont have flshy figth scenes doesnt mean the movie will suck...

and for realism im lookin at if the lightsabers were swords. Or if I had a weapon that was round but could cut anything (well a baseball bat is also round but u dont wanan be hit by it even tho it cant cut) I wouldnt be going all flashy..i mean with a regular sword u wouldnt wanna do A LOT of the stuff..ep1 was passable tho..like the 1st figth with qui gon and maul. but anakin and obi was like WHOA...not happenin..

Ugh.. Movie swordplay and saber fighting is made to look impressive, you aren't going to get a very realistic fight while the director still wants it to look all pretty. In a lot of saber fights, watching them in slow mo reveals that they're not really trying to kill each other at all..

If you think of the potency of the lightsaber, you can imagine that fights would actually be over much more quickly than in the movies, probably within seconds, but that wouldn't make for a very good movie now, would it?

Dachande: please, please type in correct English! I don't care much about grammar, but one long run-on sentence with overused ellipses and most words misspelled or written in shorthand hurts my eyes to read.

What in the ep. I fight was CGI? The actor who plays Darth Maul, Ray Park, is actually a stuntman-- as such, he did all of his own stunts; there's no CGI replacing him. Ewan McGregor did his stuff, with an occasional stunt double for him; no CGI there either. Just what were you referring to?
As to the Obi-Wan/Anakin fight in ep. III, I'm going to assume by your comments that you've never fought with a sword before. Trust me when I say that everything they do is basically sound, if occasionally applied differently due to the differences between their universe and our own.

NOT the stunts in Ep1..the figth after qui gon dies, obi and maul go at it mad fast, that was speeded up by a computer, (just the speed). in ep3 the actors that played obi and ani really did move that fast.

and I've fought with a sword, every saturday btw. And no all the prequel trilogy fights were unrealistic. (ep2 fight with obi and dooku for like 2 secs was believable.)

In the ep3 figth there is a part where anikin and obi wan stand face to face standing STRAIGHT UP(they arent even squared up and both legs are planted STRAIGHT and are shoulder lenght) and they do figure eights with otu hitting eachother. Then they finally striek but both their strikes block their opponents strike. Afterwards to break it they do force push.

So that scene is telling me when someone sword fights or ANY fight, you don't need to squared off? And you can just stand liek stick figures.

there are many examples of the unrealism of the fight, I got the movie on my computer, and have seen EVERY strike/block in SLOW MOTION. Couple of the strikes they made, wouldnt even of hit their opponent (but was blocked anyways).

He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. The action was supreme, the acting wasn't so supreme. The best acting scene throughout the entire Star Wars Prequel saga with Anakin and Padme is the scene where they are looking out the window across the buildings with the setting sun on the horizon in the city before Anakin goes off to kill everyone and go mentally retarded. Ironically, they don't speak in it either.

I took that best acting scene from somewhere but I don't remember where, but nonetheless, I agree completely.

Not really. Cause it ties in with EP4. Remember? ''Now I am the master.'' I'm not sure about yoda's, i guess audiences wanted to see Yoda kick some butt. But the Obi - Ani duel had a point, it tied the two trilogies together, which is what Lucas was aiming for. Anakin having no limbs, Obi meeting Vader for the second time, the reason why Anakin is burnt in ROTJ. It keeps the stories in chronological order, tying them together.
