El Vee, to be honest I think that's what should be done, but there's one problem. It's going to be a list full of curses! It's like, "The following words are not tolerated...." and then sailors will blush. Look at me blush right now just THINKING about it!

I think that list should be a JAK+ thing. That way, only the guys who have to deal with troublemakers and such have to deal with the foul language, and there'll be a consistent treatment of it's use.

If such a list is drawn up by the JAK+, it'll probably cover just about every concievable curse. Why? Because let's face it, some things offend some people, some people overlook it. I mean, it's probably going to end up having a "NO BLASPHEMY" rule, but if that makes the JA experience more enjoyable for some people, then it's all good. Is it so hard to be articulate and actually NOT swear? Yes. For me, anyway. But i'm typing, so I can actually control what i'm saying. (Please note, in the past i've merely chosen NOT to! :P)

Anyway, let's just chill out about this for now and see what the JAK+ have to say. I'm sure they'll make an announcement when they have come to a decision on this. I had a pretty productive discussion with Virtue earlier about it and a few ideas are being looked at, which may help create some more consistency and definition in terms of this matter.

So, on that note...

*spinhax* OMFG IM BANT :(:(:(

If nobody in the world did anything to make their sites a swearing-free environment, then I imagine the internet would be a bit of a boring place for children being restricted only to "clean" sites, considering they wouldn't be able to visit any site because none of them would be clean. That's why there are some needs for upholding such a rule, and why it is our job to keep this place reasonably clean. :)
quite true and my wording is a little off from my meaning, my meaning is that WHAT children see is not your, or any JA*, responsibility, its the parents. You endeavor to keep a clean site that is friendly to children and thats great but without a list of "dirty" words, or cursing, how can you possibly expect to enforce it.

Cussing or cursing is not an across the board definition of bad words. I work with a lot Irish folks and they let the f-bomb fly likes its free, it is free but you get my point, and to them its no big deal. We Americans don't agree so these fellas have to watch thier mouths around here and many fail.

For many if you say the lords name in vain you are cursing, draw the line guys and make a list of words you don't want to see on this site and post it in the rules so there won't be any more confusion on the matter.

If you make "if" a curse word then we know what it is and thats it. Its simple.

The word in question has multiple meanings so its very silly to take it as cursing, especially since the word is spoken with regularity through out the world with little offense taken by the vast majority.

What about frickin?

To some that is cursing, simply changing one little itty bitty syllable but it relays the same message as the f-word doesn't it. Its used in the same way all the time "frickin-A" "this frickin sucks" etc. Is it a bad word? NO!

Battlestar Galactic re-emerged a couple years ago and they cleverly got the f-word back on TV by using "frack" instead. The message is exactly the same as the f-word.

I know a man from London and he was shocked by the use of "shag" in Austin Powers movies. To him it is the same as the f-word.

Just like Buzz's post below

Quote:
..blow it out your donkey.
While a very good pun and funny, this is obviously his way to use the same word that Dane has objected to, but in a pun. Same meaning so how is it different from ***?

If I called anyone a "big whining vagina" I think my message is clear but I haven't cursed. If I were a board mod or admin I could read the intent and to me its the same as "p***y" and I would act accordingly.

Without a list its confusing, open to interpreptation and creates friction when the rule, that is not clearly defined, is broken.

Make a list, and end this debate.

cool, I love an off topic thread

How about a list of the words that are inappropriate, that would help clear things up substantially and it would also remove the element of "opinion" from said public reprimand. There is immeasurable benefit from everyone being forewarned and on the same page from the get go.

To me if I am hearing it on TV and the radio that means its OK with the FCC and okay by me. (for those residing outside of the United States and don't know what the FCC is they are the Semi-Fascist government organization that is leading the charge for censorship across our great nation, and winning since most Americans are far too lazy to speak against them, or scared of being audited by the FCC's sister org the IRS)

My 7 year old uses your dirty little 3 letter word all the time. "That smells like *** daddy" hmmmm, I guess censorship is becoming the new world fascination. Its sad, anti-freedom, and just plain wrong, but that would be my opinion, which is utterly worthless here, as all of you who hate me already know but I like to point it out anyway.

But its your site censor away, and feel really good about it while you are doing it, in fact smile as you do it cuz yer doing a great thing for all of humanity, not just the 8 year olds that visit this site. /sarcasm]

As a parent I am very appreciative of your efforts to keep this place clean, but it isn't your job. Its the parents job to monitor what the kids are looking at, my boy's PC is right next to mine and I watch his activity very closely. If there are parents out there that don't, and there are many, thats not our problem really, is it? Not in my worthless opinion = IMWO.

I don't think Buzz is nitpicking, he is backing up his underlings, like a good leader should. Right or wrong.

A valid point was raised that the rules should be applied equally to all regardless of what the police do or what parents do, the fact remains that fair is fair. If a student can't use *** then neither should a JAC. Leadership by example goes a long way. In fact leaders should be held to a higher code of ethics, google=Enron, Worldcom, Arthur Anderson.

(I know Virtue is being funny and trying to lighten the situation using sarcasm, and that is what we all like about him)

Dane is just doing his job in the way he see's fit, and it his right to do. He has been entrusted to know what is best for all of us by the Council. That being the case your account here is subject to his/those opinions and if you don't like those opinions your are certainly permitted to never return to this URL. Like many before us, you won't be missed.

The word in question is harmless, even in all of its uses, but I notice it hasn't been editted in the lead post, this is the only thing I find offensive. That one would complain about it, have the power/rights to change it, and doesn't. There in yet another worthless opinion, likely to fall on deaf ears.

peace y'all

And Cuzza, the ratings are there to say who they feel should be viewing the movie and what steps should be taken. PG-13 is Parental Guidance Strongly Suggested, and R is Restricted which means anyone under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Most theaters will enforce the R-rating but sometimes they don't. But if there's a movie channel playing it, and parents don't have it blocked off then a kid younger then 17 will be able to watch it. And its not illegal for them to watch it. If it comes to the attention of authorities that parents are letting their kids watch R movies, they can't do anything at all about it, thank God. Its not illegal, its just not advised.

Which part? The part where I've been pulled over and gotten a speeding ticket yet know of people who have been going faster than me and been let off with a warning or not even gotten pulled over?

Or where the police aren't arresting/fining parents for letting their kids play Grand Theft Auto or watching Terminator 2.

If you're gonna do it now, you're gonna have to do it in the future as well. Oh My God, you mean that life isn't fair and sometimes people are not always treated the same. The police do not treat all people who are speeding equally.

And last time I checked it wasn't illegal for an 8 year old to play the game, just as its not illegal for an 8 year old to watch a PG-13 movie or even an R rated movie.

frankly JJ i didn't think it was 'dirty laundry' because the word was pretty placid, it was to start with imo a pretty friendly advisory. I realise now that this was a mistake on my part as cuzza replied very negatively and publicly also.

Frankly Ass is not that offensive but I stand by my request that cuzza doesn't use it. On another note I don't remember ever asking anyone to leave the academy.

I can imagine someone clamping their virgin ears over the word 'derriere' if they're ten. But if they're ten...what are they doing here? Because you can't play JK3 legally until you're thirteen. If you're thirteen and you still can't stand it, thank the heavens we have thejediacademy.net to cater to your sensibilites, because real life sure as hell won't.

Okay, allow me to speak as both a person who has acted like a total retard on this site, and someone who has had to deal with total retards on this site. Also keep in mind that, as a Royal Navy rating, i'm an EXPERT on foul language. :P

Cuzza, even though you and I may not personally think use of that word is a big deal, it's pretty selfish to use it, funny letters or not. It still might offend some of the really young kids (Remember that Shrawn kid or whatever his name was? He was EIGHT YEARS OLD! :P) around here, or indeed their parents. Y'don't want DJ or Virtue getting an angry email from a parent. I know you'll think that's an unlikely scenario, but it COULD happen. At the end of the day, you could have said butt, bum, behind or bottom anyway. :P

Dane, maybe you should have emailed Cuzza or something. Doing your dirty laundry in public isn't something folks wanna see. I'm just butting in because I wanna help you guys, seeing as it's already went from a discussion about an amusing phonecall (which i'll check out after this post :D) to a discussion about the JA's rules. I think one of the best ways the JAK+ can deal with situations is behind closed doors. You and I both know that things have happened in the upper levels that everyone would like to be kept there (And I was usually the CAUSE of that, but what can I say? I suck tremendously :P), and in a way this is the same. If you guys want to have some sort of discussion about rules, or if Cuzza wants to stick it to "the man", then go ahead, but I don't think anyone else really wants to see it so publicly, y'know?

But to be honest, life's just easier when you swallow your pride and do as your told. Due to my job, I have to do as i'm told or I could face anything from loss of pay to a jail sentence, which has taught me to do it. But y'know what? It's not hard to just say, yeah, sorry, I won't do it again. So let's try and do that, yeah? :)

By the way, you can't really leave the JA. Believe me, i've tried. Alot. But the fact is, you're not even here in the first place. Just remember guys, you're sitting in front of a computer. It's plugged into the wall. It's extremely easy to just get along with everyone here once you realise that. :D

Now be cool and let's all have funnnn! :D

It would be extremely unlikely that you would be asked to leave the academy by a JAK like that. If that were the case, however, talk to a JAT or JAC about it. Obviously, there may be some things that haven't specifically been mentioned on the rules page, so sometimes a JAK+ needs to request something extra of you. As I have already mentioned, it is unlikely you would be seriously asked to do something silly. If you are seriously asked to do something by a staff member, it will be for good reason. ;)

You posted a word that Dane felt was inappropriate for these forums, despite it being censored with $$. It doesn't matter if it has more than one meaning, it still carries one that can be offensive. You were simply asked not to use that type of language, but by questioning Dane's authority instead of doing as he asks, you have not only disrespected it, but taken this thread way off-topic. As I mentioned already, you should take this into a more private form. I know you have already talked to me in private, but you should have kept it there.

If somebody were to say another potentially offensive word, then they may well be "publicly warned", or rather asked not to in that thread. Remember that discussing it further ruins the thread, much like this one.

Is there anything else you would like to say, or can we get back on topic now?

Being here longer than a JAK+ does not give you the ability to freely undermine their authority. Dane knows the rules very, very well. I'm sure he was almost famous for it at one time. As flexible as the rules may seem, when a JAK+ advises you to do something, you should do it. Whether or not this word is a swear word, it can be considered offensive to some. Since Dane has told you not to use that type of language here, you should do as he says. If he doesn't see that as a valid censor of the word, you should respect that. The rules are that if a JAK+ requests something from you, you should do it. If you wish to know why, contact them in a more personal form, such as MSN, IRC or profile.

Dude, I just can't believe I'm being "publicly warned" for saying "A**". It's unbelievable. Considering the word "ass" is actually another name for a donkey, maybe I was referring to that? :P I wasn't but if somebody was, would he publicly warned for it?

You seem to think I'm disrespecting the rules and more noteably, Dane. I'm not. I have the upmost respect for all JAK+ but I don't see why I should stop saying that word.

The next time I see the word "crap" used, I'll come straight to you and I want that person publicly warned. Not to mean to them or anything, but just being arkward.

For the record, if a JAK asks me to leave the Academy, do I have to just because he told me to?
