Is going to the movies, going to end? | |

Ok, obviously it won't "end" or at least not for a very long time. But even this years summer block busters have been doing worse than previous years. Quote: http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/10/news/fortune500/summer_movies/ Above is only one article of many that can be found on the internet and in newspapers. So I was wondering? Are people in the JA going to movies less? Why? I gotta say, I used to love going to movies, now will only go to the movies if I am like 99% sure I will like the movie. My list would be insanely long, but I will keep down to my top 2 complaints. 1.) Movie theatre food sucks. My girlfriend and I are both hippies when it comes to food, we buy all our fruits/veggies from local farmers (well not all but around 90%) who have organic farms. So prefer to have something Like Chips and homemade Salsa, which I will was down with juice or water, instead of popcorn and pop. 2. I don't we are in the minority here. We are now looking into buying a nice big TV. The one we are looking at is 50" and does 1080p. Why go to the movies when this TV will totally be a theatre in the house. So I will throw in all the "its better to watch a movie in your living room where you can press pause and be on a nice comfy couch, etc, etc" So are you going to the movies less? Why? Or are you going more/the same, and Why? _______________ Silent Bob (Kevin Smith): You know, there's a million fine looking women in the world, dude. But they don't all bring you lasagna at work. I've been going to them less and less. I too have someone who can get me in for free, and it's just not worth it anymore. I used to say the environment was good, but that was solely for Episode III. Let's face it, you have die-hard fans watching, clapping, and cheering the film. Priceless. I went to see two recently: Wedding Crashers and 40-year-old virgin. Both movies were good, but the audience was both underage (I know there we people that got in that are too young for it) and were immature. The annoyance of being really the only adults in the theatre full of high-schoolers with no life, was enough to make me want to lobotomize myself with a spoon. Even more so when the film showed boobies, the immaturity of the crowd was drowning me. So I stay home now. I have a great theatre system, with the sound buffered through the computer to the speaker system. I had also seen movies where the high-school student running the sound borked it up. So we had sound only out of the front speaker. All the side walls and back were out, no sound from them. It sucked, even though it was free for me. Waste of my time. No offense to those in the theatre business, I just don't like going to theatres where either the audience is high-shoolers who act all immature and ruin the movie, or the person running the show is a high-schooler who doesn't know how to run a film projector, but normally runs the popcorn machine quite well. So I'll stay home, watch my DVDs and the Video-on-demand through my cable box. Significantly nicer, and if som high schooler annoys me in my living room, I can toss him to the curb. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. My home system is nice enough that I don't mind waiting for DVDs for some of the more mediocre Holywood movies. Mig cool movies such as Star wars, sin city, and Batman are exceptions. Those should bee seen in a giant theatre full of fans. Those 2 cases aside I only really go to the local indie theatre very much. Theres so much more out there than that processed Hollywood crap. Well, working at a movie theatre I'll share my two cents. 1) I like going to the movies especially when it's a movie you just know your going to enjoy. As an employee, tickets are not an issue for me because I see flix for free. Popcorn and soda can be too as long as I have my own containers for them which makes my movie going experience next to nothing as far as money is concerned. Awhile back, I used to be able to set the movies to play after hours which was really nice because you didn't get the cell phones, talking, eating, rocking, and bumping of your chair from all of the lovely other guess you have to share the experience with. 2) THE PRICES HAVE BECOME HELLISH!!!! How can a theatre justify selling a hand full of seed, a paper bag, and a squirt of buttery flavor topping for close to $6.00?!? Soda's are insane too where a small cost over $3.00 for 32 oz where 7/11 and other fine local stores will sell 44 oz for under a dollar. Candy is platnum or gold, well, that's what it seems like for a small box cost a little less then a soda. Ticket prices are getting pretty high too and I watch them go up once or twice a year regularly. I'll watch mothers bringing their children to see a movie usually 2-5 kids and 1 or 2 parents and they spend between $20-$50 easily just to get their kids and themselves into the picture. Next they purchase concessions which just about all kids want and they spend roughly the same there as they did for the tickets. $50-$100 easily blown away to show your children, possible a few of their friends, a good time?!? And what exactly are we giving them for this purchase??? 3) I've seen it in my own theatre and in many others that I visit as well at least in my area and I'm not sure if many would agree with me here or not, but the professionalism in the theatre buisness has dropped dramatically! Managers don't care to provide guests with a memorable movie going experience, only work to make their employees push out what ever number crunching statistic corporate is looking for this month, and customer service is poor to say things nicely. Managers will make guests wait before taking care of their needs and if at all possible, makes the employees take care of the complaint without meeting, greeting, and saying sorry while correcting what ever the guests inconvenience. I personally think that is rude concidering the amount of money is spent going to the movies. The staff aren't friendly for the most part. Projectionist are low quality not detecting/correcting/handling problems efficiently. I see movies start late all the time, not centered in frame, not focused, no sound turned on for the feature, wrong masking setting, wrong apperature setting, and even the wrong movie on extremely rare occasions but happens none-the-less!!! I'm sorry, but I personally have a huge problem facing the public which are the paying customers knowing that this is what they are paying for. 4) The wonderful paying customers. ![]() Anyhoo, I've ran right off the subject and into left field, but for me. I personally don't think movies are worth it. Bring your family to a theme park should cost a pretty penny, not to a motion picture. Being that I enjoy them for free, hell yeah it's worth it, but judging the performance of what one actually gets for the money they spend, no. For me, spending a nice night at home drinking a beer eating whatever it is I feel like eating and watching a flix is so much more worth it without the huge screen and the flashy sound. (We don't sell beer or allow any outside food or beverages to paying customers.) Mat. shows use to cost a few dollars, ran all the way up until the evening, and a whole family could actually enjoy a day at the movies with profession, kind, curtious staff for around $20-30 dollars including concessions. Things are just way out of hand in the movie buisness in my opinion and the inner workings of most corperate offices (which I'm electing to not even mention in this rant) are enough to make one puke. The movies are over rated and over priced but put another Star Wars picture in the movies and I'M THERE!!!! ![]() _______________ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Even the Video Gaming industry generates more revenue than the movie industry, which surprised me when I found out. The thing is that you do indeed get to escape your own life and take things into a whole different perspective when you're immersed into the movie, mainly a good one that you actually like. In a way, that's exactly why I like entertainment so much, you get to escape the normalties of life. |

Frankly the reason revenues are down I would say is because the movies are crap. A lot of movies that hollywood is turning out are just rehashed old movies, or just some bad remake of an old tv shows. The Island - TV remake believe it or not War of the Worlds- remake of a book and movie Bewitched- TV Dukes of Hazard - TV The Longest Yard - Movie remake The Honeymooners - TV Now sure you've got the big huge blockbuster like Episode 3 and Batman Begins that come out and make a ton of money, but they can only bump up the totals so much. In the past there were good movies for the filler as well. Now there's just junk that has little broad appeal to draw large audiences. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. I still go to the movie theater for every single huge summer movie midnight showing with all my friends. They're always a blast for me. However, during the school year, I save the money I manage to salvage by only going to the movies that I believe that I'm going to really enjoy. Any Tarantinos auto-qualifies for that and buying the DVD. I also like to occasionally go out with friends on weekends to see movies that look like quite the adventure. Nothing beats the feeling of getting to go to the traditional theater with a gimungous screen in which you will be taken along for a ride. Theater food around here is extremely expensive, so I try to steer away from theater food as I'm usually very low on cash unless it's my birthday or Christmas. Sometimes I go to the Target store right next to the movie theater to buy the exact same candy sold at the movie theater at 2 dollars for 50 cents. Although I love watching movies on DVD with family or friends, nothing, NOTHING, beats the awesomeness of the cinema. This comment was edited by Fire on Aug 17 2005 06:57am. |

Well I love going to the american: movies, teh anglais : Cinema. Cinema > home Films come out in the cinema before DVD and definetly way before TV, well basic tv ![]() But they are talking about releasing DVD's the same time as it comes out at the cinema. Which would in my opinion, crash the cinema's point of existence. you'd end up just renting it from blockbuster for cheaper...and u can watch it reptitively all night. _______________ Moo |

1) I hate it when people eat popcorn/soda/food/drinks in the theater, we can all hear it and it ruins the movie for us. I'm really sick of hearing the constant noise of plastic wrapper and popcorn during some of the most queit and emotional scenes of any movie. This guy kept rolling up to close his popcorn bag and opening it over and over like squirells were going to snatch them, I wanted to take it and chuck it across the theater room saying "here's your popcorn!". If you want to eat, eat before you come. And don't get me started on people talking... 2) I love going to the movies, very fun, it's dark, has a monstrous screen bigger than any I've seen inside a home, and loud booming speakers. Except for the facts in my first paragraph I'll continue to go to the movies. By the way, I went to a Bruce Springsteen concert and people where actually bringing in baseball park-like food. Unbelievable. This is a concert wich is very close and personal, only 5,000 people in a half arena/theater setting with candles and chandeliers. Very intimate, but people actually bought food and drinks to watch it like some sideshow! _______________ Free Tibet!
