Quote: Apple keeps making iPods. Microsoft already has a pretty bad reputation. If fact, they have a down right awful reputation, so i dont think they care too much about that. They will surely do option A. Apple doesn't pay MS a red cent. Now there are two possible paths: a) MS tries to enforce their patent and claim their royalties plus damages. That would be interesting, however it is unlikely MS could uphold the patent application, and if they tried it would gain them a pretty bad reputation to be honest. b) MS does nothing. Or perhaps even drops their patent application having scored their point in proving they are the superior company business wise. Might improve MS stocks, more likely hurt Apple stocks as they show a rather lacklustre way of doing business. Shareholders are generally not impressed when these things happen. _______________ "You can't get Windows on a Mac because the drivers are not compatible." --- Some dude from the Geek Squad "So if you have quad-core, you have four times the RAM, right?" --- Some guy at Best Buy This comment was edited by DarthMike on Aug 20 2005 12:11am. |

Quote: I'd just like to point out that Boeing do not have a monopoly, rather it's a duopoly - know a little company called Airbus? LOL I was waiting for this, Airbus. Airbus is a joke that has never turned a profit, nor do they need to. They are subsidised by the French Governement, they don't answer to stock holders and have unlimited funds. They are not a company, they are a division of the French Aironautical Agency, not sure the name but its like the French NASA. Nice attempt though. Check out thier homepage (google = Airbus) they don't have an financial statements, no investor info and thier orders vs deliveries page is the worst math ever, Enron could count better than these people!!I worked at Boeing, that doesn't mean I know all just more than most, and Airbus is the only competition Boeing has. It is a worthy competitor that would have gone out of business long ago if it were for French taxpayers money. EDIT: Airbus has no manufacturing or business presence in the United States and thus the American rules of Anti-Trust do not apply, Boeing = Monopoly on high altitude high capacity Commercial Aircraft. No doubt Dice. How much do you think Microsoft will charge per unit once the patent is granted? Oh and yes these charges can be retroactive... Read that article carefully. It says they put a patent on one part of the iPod. That means they could have put a patetent on the port where the cord plugs in, or the battery or something like that. I don't think its going to be as big of a win as ppl think. Because its not like they patetend the entire iPod. (like i said, read carefully) Quote: Apple took too long to file a patent ON PART of its blockbuster iPod music players, so Microsoft jumped in and beat Apple to it. -Dice _______________ Dicemaster This comment was edited by Dicemaster on Aug 19 2005 07:17pm. |

Quote: That's impossible due to the Antri-trust law, Some years ago Microsoft had literally destroyed Apple, and because of it, they were forced to pay money to Apple ... LOL, this is Naive my good man, Monopolies do occur and, depending on the company, they are allowed to continue being a Monopoly as long as the Government allows it. It wouldn't be illegal for MS to buy out Apple, as long as they kept supporting the machines that are already deployed. You want an example, ever heard of Boeing Airplane Company? They are the only company in North America that continues to build commercial airliners, thus making them a Monopoly. They closed down Lockheeds commercial program, they bought out McDonell Douglas and squeezed out General Dynamics aswell. If it weren't for military contracts the above companies would be history. The Anti-Trust law is in place to make sure monopolies don't occur. Quote: Hell no. They'll be able to screw it up, like everything ... They may very well be the devil incarnate but they make money for thier share holders and that is good for the economy.I can't believe you would allow Microsoft to gain a monopoly ... they're clearly the worst of all companies in my honest opinion. Quote: By the way, have you ever tried a Macintosh computer? I am an IT Professional and I do support several Macs, I own a Mac that I have used for web design and Photo editting, and I don't like it. My opinion not withstanding the machine has its place and a very loyal following, the platform will be around for quite sometime I am sure. That doesn't change my opinion that the machine is a waste of natural resources and I would take great pleasure in stacking them all together and dropping a nuke on them.I have to do some work now, LOL, but I'll be back _______________ “Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Quote: you have a patent, you're entitled to xx% of the profit made of the product of which you have a patent on. First things first, Microsoft is bigger than just Bill Gates. Lots of people make lots of decisions without consulting Gates, but in this instance you can be sure that Bill was in on it.Apple has to pay Bill Gates money because he's holding the patent ... In so this could actually have multiple outcomes 1) it could be that Ipods become more expensive, because they have to gain more money, so that they can keep the same amount of money, after all the charges have been deducted 2) it could mean the disappearance of Ipods (whcih I highly doubt) Of course the patent could be destroyed by the court of justice, but by the time that's done, (estimated six months) Bill Gates will have achieved its goal of making more money on someone else's work. When the IPOD hit the market it was a HUGE economic boost for Apple. Finally Apple had a product that everybody wanted, shoot I want one and I won't even use Quicktime unless I have to. This is a very savvy move on MS part, I am sure the research has been thorough and MS will recieve this patent. So Apple will have to either pay upwards of 50% of gross $$ per 'pod per co-proprietary technology standard or re-engineer the IPOD and change its name. Its is sad but not the first time it has happened. Apple has always been slow on thier business end, thier technology end, and now on thier common sense end. They should have never even introduced the damn thing to the consumer without locking down all patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Prediction: Microsoft will buy out Apple in the next Ten years and this annoucement will simple light the way. If you love your Mac better bronze it cuz they will be a thing of the past soon enuf. next from Microsoft we should see a Windows adaptation of Linux.
