Since being in the military and especially since becoming a pilot, I have had to wrestle with time zone conversions and the like. It has given me some headaches in the past. So I thought I would give a simplistic explanation since it's cathartic to do so. :P Maybe in the process someone will pick up something they didn't know.

UTC is Universal Time, Coordinated. UTC time is still essentially the same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) more or less (you can split some hairs here if you want to be difficult or just anal :P). UTC and GMT are sometimes referred to as "Zulu" time. Times followed by a "Z" are Zulu times and those with an "L" are "local" times. From what I understand, people in Britain now observe Daylight Savings Time so during the summer they are GMT+1 (it's called British Summer Time).

Technically, this has a consequence for people that are in places that observe Daylight Savings Time. Their time in relation to GMT or UTC will change depending on the time of the year.

For example, I live in Wisconsin in the US. I am in the Central time zone. Right now we are using Central Daylight Time (CDT). CDT is GMT-5 or UTC-5. In October we switch to Central Standard Time (CST) which is GMT-6 or UTC-6.

So you have to be aware of these things when you schedule JA meetings with friends or Masters or Padawans or whoever. Luckily, the JA website adjusts class times automagically based on your home time zone!

I think this is mostly correct except for some minor technical details.

automatic will add some more confussion.
for example. some years ago we had daylight saving changed etc. in recent years we didnt.
now all forums, software and such... still does automatic daylight change thus confusing me and showing false times. ofcourse now in JA everything is ok :)

I didn't think I implied that I just found out about time zones.

I was just thinking about them since I'm seen recent confusion with, and mistakes made over, them.

I thought I would try to post something to perhaps help out a little.

You just found out there are timezones..? It's really not that difficult, the hardest thing is knowing exactly which timezone a country is in.

For our friends in Australia...I learned that they too have CDT and CST just like we have in the US. Exact same names, just on the other side of the world. ;)
