The Official JA Martial Arts Thread! | |
Ataris - Milwaukees Finest |
Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira.. So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." |

Quote: not a martial art. it takes just as much discpline and strength as a martial art. and its harder to train safely. your not gunna get smacked in the face if ur traing combos ect. but if you training combos and fluid movments. you could clip feet. smsharms or break bones. . just thoguht id say. Even if it took more discipline and strength than any martial art, it doesn't make it one? Like I don't consider long-distance running a martial art, even if there is major pain-age j/k, and I know what you meant -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." |

I consider martial arts a form of self-defence. A way to stop yourself getting hurt by other people, by means of hurting/stopping them with little effort. Parkour is a way of getting from A to B quickly, not a way to defend yourself effectively in any way, though I guess it could prove useful as an escape tactic.. _______________ -Kauyon Draconis [Official master of Ataris] |

Heh. Well, I guess you could consider me a white belt in Jiu Jitsu-- I'm learning some of it along with TKD, anyway. And I've had exactly one lesson of kung fu, and it gave me two thoughts: one, that it's very different from TKD, and two, that teaching a bunch of high-school boys ways to hurt each other might not be the smartest thing to do in the long run. [the kung fu was at a summer camp...] You have them running around going "I know kung fu!" whenever there's a minor conflict. Annoyed me to no end... _______________ Well then. I have the green belt in jiu jitsu (I was SO close to the blue), then I had to give it up to prioritise school (this happened about 3 years ago). I'm pretty sure I'll pick it up again some day. IMO the coolest Martial Art to watch is without doubt Capoeira.. But the most efficent one in the ring is MT imo. My parents met through Karate and earning their Brown belts together. Love kind of took over and they didn't continue on, but it's always a point of interest to note (I like it at least). I never really had the opportunities to try out the different styles, but I was fortunate enough to take Aikido lessons for about 3 months. You know I was seriously just about to make a thread like this a few days ago, but anyway... I have a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, and I'm just about to test for my purple belt on October 1st. I've been training really hard for it up to soaking with sweat and exhaustion so wish me luck Not much else to say about me other than the fact that I do Tae Kwon Do with "Oh Do Kwon", and I like the sport part of it for fun, but I do it for the art part to try to bring my mind and body to a state of enlightenment. _______________ Free Tibet! Well, I'm a black belt in Tae Kwan Do (only first degree, sorry...), and though some people think it's more a sport than a martial art, they don't realize that there are really two versions of TKD: basically, the sport and the martial art, also known as the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (the sport) and the International Tae Kwon Do Federation (The martial art.) The ITF came first. Basically, in a very watered-down explanation, it was developed mostly by people from South Korea, so even though North Korea really liked it, they couldn't use it for political reasons (silly politics). So, they altered it a bit, called it 'world' instead of 'international', and declared it their national sport. So now, you have the martial art, which is still practiced basically the same way (though there have been advances made) and the sport, which is what you see in the olympics. There are vast differences in how it's done and what's allowed. Something very basic: in WTF, punches to the head are not allowed. In ITF, they are, although punches to the face might get you disqualified in a tournament. ...I'm rambling, arn't I? Sorry. _______________ Well then. Just so you know, just because I don't post often doesn't mean I don't lurk this place multiple times every day... |
