The Official JA Martial Arts Thread!

Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira..

So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! :)

I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! :D

What's your favorite martial art? To watch, to do, or just what sounds the coolest if you don't know! :D (I can't have ALL martial arts, but I'll put 2 in each option)

not a martial art. it takes just as much discpline and strength as a martial art. and its harder to train safely. your not gunna get smacked in the face if ur traing combos ect. but if you training combos and fluid movments. you could clip feet. smsharms or break bones. . just thoguht id say.
Even if it took more discipline and strength than any martial art, it doesn't make it one? :D Like I don't consider long-distance running a martial art, even if there is major pain-age :D:D j/k, and I know what you meant ;)

I consider martial arts a form of self-defence.
A way to stop yourself getting hurt by other people, by means of hurting/stopping them with little effort.
Parkour is a way of getting from A to B quickly, not a way to defend yourself effectively in any way, though I guess it could prove useful as an escape tactic..

The reason I started this thread was that they already had an official parkour thread.. :D And it's not a martial art. It's more of an extreme sport. You just try to go through an object, over or under it as smoothly as possible, without stopping.. That's not a martial art imo!

Some stuff I've been enjoying lately:

1. Wushu videos.. Just try google with Wushu Sampler or something similar, they're just awesome..

2. UFC.. Well you know what this is, and in case you don't just go here..

3. Capoeira videos.. I suggest you google this too, they're awesome!

Heh. Well, I guess you could consider me a white belt in Jiu Jitsu-- I'm learning some of it along with TKD, anyway. And I've had exactly one lesson of kung fu, and it gave me two thoughts: one, that it's very different from TKD, and two, that teaching a bunch of high-school boys ways to hurt each other might not be the smartest thing to do in the long run. [the kung fu was at a summer camp...] You have them running around going "I know kung fu!" whenever there's a minor conflict. Annoyed me to no end...

I have the green belt in jiu jitsu (I was SO close to the blue), then I had to give it up to prioritise school (this happened about 3 years ago). :(

I'm pretty sure I'll pick it up again some day. However, I'll probably start from the bottom again. :)

IMO the coolest Martial Art to watch is without doubt Capoeira.. But the most efficent one in the ring is MT imo. And quite frankly, I'm not small/nimble enough to do Capoeira, so I just beat up people in the ring :D j/k

My parents met through Karate and earning their Brown belts together. Love kind of took over and they didn't continue on, but it's always a point of interest to note (I like it at least).

I never really had the opportunities to try out the different styles, but I was fortunate enough to take Aikido lessons for about 3 months. Very interesting way of thinking, an Art I'd like to revisit down the road one day...

You know I was seriously just about to make a thread like this a few days ago, but anyway...

I have a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, and I'm just about to test for my purple belt on October 1st. I've been training really hard for it up to soaking with sweat and exhaustion so wish me luck ;)

Not much else to say about me other than the fact that I do Tae Kwon Do with "Oh Do Kwon", and I like the sport part of it for fun, but I do it for the art part to try to bring my mind and body to a state of enlightenment.

Well, I'm a black belt in Tae Kwan Do (only first degree, sorry...), and though some people think it's more a sport than a martial art, they don't realize that there are really two versions of TKD: basically, the sport and the martial art, also known as the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (the sport) and the International Tae Kwon Do Federation (The martial art.)
The ITF came first. Basically, in a very watered-down explanation, it was developed mostly by people from South Korea, so even though North Korea really liked it, they couldn't use it for political reasons (silly politics). So, they altered it a bit, called it 'world' instead of 'international', and declared it their national sport. So now, you have the martial art, which is still practiced basically the same way (though there have been advances made) and the sport, which is what you see in the olympics. There are vast differences in how it's done and what's allowed. Something very basic: in WTF, punches to the head are not allowed. In ITF, they are, although punches to the face might get you disqualified in a tournament.
...I'm rambling, arn't I? Sorry.
