The Official JA Martial Arts Thread! | |
Ataris - Milwaukees Finest |
Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira.. So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." |

Quote: Well cancer is caused by malformation and mutation of cells. Now sure, if you're constantly needing more cells because you keep killing them you're gonna have more opportunity to have a few mutated cells here and there during mitosis, but tbh, realistically, destroying your shins isn't going to increase your chances of getting cancer. This is true. |

Here's a video of the purple belt form, Tae Geuk (4) Sah Jang. (just click play video and it should come up) This guy is really good, each of the moves look on target, with a good snap. This link here has all of our WTF Tae Geuk poomse with videos (this place does belts a little different then us, we have orange, purple, and brown where they're stripes are). I love that guys Ki-ahp, it's great. That site even has ITF Chang Hon poomse, that's your forms right? And WTF "Palgwe" on the right is the old forms, from the 60's and stuff. _______________ Free Tibet! Click this link, and learn Here too This comment was edited by Plo Koon on Oct 10 2005 04:42pm. |

Whatever you say, Plo Oh, you know what would be cool? Me making a video of me doing all the forms I know, then you making a video of all the forms you know, and showing them to each other, so we can see all the differences. Most will probably be completely different, but you never know... Only problem with that is I have nowhere to do it, nothing to record it with, nothing to edit it with, and nowhere to host it. Heh. No matter how much I complain, low rank forms are still fun to do, if only because I sometimes know them better than the people who are at that rank-- and I have better technique regardless. I'm really good with forms, both learning them and remembering them, so I rarely make a mistake once I know it. Of course, I'm horrible with form meanings and have to re-memorize them each and every time I test, but whatever. _______________ Well then. ...That's worse than insane. I can't see why you would actually want to do that. Sure, getting kicked in the shins hurts, but purposefully damaging yourself... ...In other news, I've decided what saturday TKD classes are good for: my ego. They're an all-rank class, so there are white belts there sometimes. Today it was just three green belts and three black belts (including myself). What we were doing was simple to me, but new stuff for the green belts, so they were amazed and I was like 'heh, this is easy'... Okay, not the best story, but saturday classes arn't good for much else. I also did my form a bunch of times. Yay. I am no closer to learning the form I need to learn. _______________ Well then. hmm I don't know about shin cancer.. I guess that could mean cancer in a way that not actual cancer, but some type of osteoporosis or similar thing, eating away your shins, making them soft or something like that.. that would make sense since that stuff happens.. I was watching a documentary on Muay Thai some time ago and apparently the rate for shin cancer in Thailand, mostly among the fighters was especially high. This makes sense as shins are used frequently in MT. I take karate 'cause the people are nice and it improves my speed, but I do take JJ every other week and I've dabbled in MT over the past 3 months to increase practical self-defense. Uh oh, I just twisted my left foot ankle in sparring class, and the thing is we weren't even sparring. we where doing fake sparring, like no- contact counter practicing. The martial arts shoes that I wear stop like glue when they are on the mat, so while I was switching stance to counter his fast kick, my foot kinda stubbed the ground instead of sliding because of the shoes, and I fell/tripped. We used to have the korean flag up, before the building was renovated. I dunno where it went. But yeah, it should be up there. We've got shin guards, too, that I really should be wearing to spar, 'cause blocking things with my shins really hurts otherwise. I'm not quite sure where they are, though... somewhere around the house, anyway. Why would forearms need protection? They're nice and bony, hurts them as much as it hurts you. And, to paraphrase Master McNeely, chest protectors are 'the worst thing that could have happened to TKD.' I'm not going to go into his reasons why, unless you really want me to. Anyway, we don't use them. As a random side note, I love looking at the pictures on my school's site of my black belt testing-- I had such horrible technique back then. Your school doesn't have the Korean flag up? that's not right man, boo! And I can see you have a more karate based TKD, with the japanese influenced, fold-over dobok. We have the V-neck uniforms, I believe that's where Korea wanted to totally make TKD their own and break off from japanese colonial rule influence. You also do the karate looking sparring, with foot and hand guards compared to our shin guards, forearm guards and a chest protector. Tell me, is that ITF way of sparring? I can really see that you guy's do the ITF, I believe we do WTF here, Tae Geuk Poomse, ect ect. _______________ Free Tibet! To be honest, Plo, I have no clue. I did a bit of looking through both my school's and the USTF's websites, but nowhere could I find anything that said what variant of TKD they teach. I know it's ITF rather than WTF, but that's all... (The annoying thing about googling for 'USTF' is that there are two United States TaeKwonDo Federations...)
