Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira..

So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! :)

I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! :D

In general, getting into the rhythm of the music isn't a good thing, unless you're just doing it for excersize and stuff. But if you're learning to defend yourself, it's not good, because real fights don't have rhythms, and if you get yourself into the habit it'll be really jarring when you fight for real-- or even just when you spar, if whatever martial art you do does that.
Yeah that's true, but you need to get in shape before you get in the ring.. And you do that much faster if you forget about fatique and geta rhythm in what you're doing.. I have practices with no music too, more technique training.. Clinching, accuracy in punches/kicks.. stuff like that.. :)

...Music? I don't really listen to music. Ever. Not while I'm doing TKD, anyway...
Actually, a few years back the place next to us was a jazz school, so we sometimes could hear the music from there.

In general, getting into the rhythm of the music isn't a good thing, unless you're just doing it for excersize and stuff. But if you're learning to defend yourself, it's not good, because real fights don't have rhythms, and if you get yourself into the habit it'll be really jarring when you fight for real-- or even just when you spar, if whatever martial art you do does that.

thx for your links Plo, really appreciate it! :)

A thing that just sprung to my mind. The ones of you guys who are and have been training martial arts. Could you please tell me what kind of music you like to listen to when you train? Did you listen to music in the gym if you trained at one? :)

We usually have some rock or some lesscore trance songs playing in our gym, and imo it really helps people forget about the fatique and even gives a certain rhythm to your punches and kicks.. I understand if some more spiritual martial art gyms don't have music, but we at our Muay Thai gym have and it suits everyone good.. :)

I found this ultra rare Bruce Lee interview from the 1960's. It aired on the television from a canadian talk show I believe. It's called the lost interview, on wich Bruce talks about Martial Arts.

This other clip I found is a Martial Arts award show tribute honoring bruce that aired on TNT a few years ago, it's really nice.

I would suggest you google for "Wushu samplers".. They're absolutely crazy, I can also send you some over MSN or IRC if you can accept DCC's, and ever happen to catch me there..

Wushu is a form of Kung Fu, basicly imitating animals.. I have loads of other videos from other martial arts too (~60GB).. So just holla if ya see me.. :)

Like Carve said, you need everything to be a well-rounded fighter.. I'm not going to the UFC/Pr1de though, nor would I want to.. I love watching UFC, I do it on a regular basis. But I could never see myself in there.. Just doesn't feel like I could go in there and take/deal punishment like that.

That's why I stay with Muay Thai. Something I know, something I know I be good at.. And something that doesn't require you to be a well-rounded fighter.. Just an MT fighter. :)

I thought about taking some Shooto lessons, but we'll see.. If I go that way, then surely I will take on some smaller gloves and go for the more UFC-styled matches.. But I'm afraid I wouldn't like it that much anyways..

Muay Thai is cool and all but personally I'm all about mixing it up. You really do need to work specifically with groundwork, wrestling, etc., to be a well-rounded fighter.

Having said that, Wushu is mind-numbingly cool.

I love to watch martial arts, especially Judo (or jiujitsu), I just never had time and motivation to train in anything like that. I taught myself a few things, making my fighting style a mix of Kung Fu, jiujitsu, and Karate. Someday maybe I'll take martial arts, I think it would be a fun way to get some excercise I don't get...

That's kind of sad :( I mean, it's Thaiboxing so we in Europe use the Thai rules aswell.. Of course it's watered down on some levels of competition, but professional bouts have elbows.. In the lower level bouts the fighters will decide what rules will apply, so it can be elbows, or not..

Elbows are legal in MT matches:

Wikipedia on Muay Thai:
Quote:
1. The basic offensive techniques in Muay Thai use fists, elbows, shins, feet, and knees to strike the opponent.

2. Except for Japan, kickboxing usually is a watered down version of Muay Thai in which the fighters restrict their kicks to above the waist, and elbows and knees are not allowed.

Muay Thai is called the "science of 8 limbs", 8 limbs meaning the feet, hands, knees, and elbows.. You still don't believe me? Read more at muaythaionline.net! :)

In MT fights elbows are legal in the ring.. In some lower-class matches the rules are decided by the participants, atleast everywhere else except Thailand.. Elbows are an essential part of MT style fighting, in K1 fights there are the same rules as in MT matches, except there's no elbows.. don't know if your wife confuses some rules, or if the matches are different in San Diego, than in Finland/Europe.. :)

I've heard about Kru Mark on a couple of occasions.. My trainer is Petri Martinez, the guy first up in the list.. You can see a list of championchip belts he holds, alongside with a pic of him.. I wonder if your wife has ever heard of him? :)

my wife does muay thai, she kicks HARD, jeez no one kicks harder than a thai kick boxer, I do some wushu, but its about centering and focus for me, I let my .45 do my fightin,

I would say that muay thai is one of those fighting arts that really is about kickin someones ass, I am sure that there is many of these but when I watch muay thai fighters train they train to fight, not box not sparr, but to hurt someone

my wife is always tellin me "elbows are illegal in the ring, and when I see some ropes up I won't use em!" the training has made her extremely fast and agile, I am quite proud of her

my wife wants me to add that her instructor is Kru Mark out of San Diego, and she also says that you muay thai people may know that name

Heh. I'm having the most trouble with grappling, and that's more jiu jitsu than TKD. Other than that, the only thing I really had trouble with in the past was breaking boards-- For the longest time I couldn't do it, until suddenly I did and then I could. Basically, I didn't think I could so I couldn't. The other time I had trouble was when I got overconfident and neglected to set myself up properly before breaking, but I don't count that as having trouble with it...

YAY! :D

Just got word from the army that my troop-transfer has gone through, so I won't be joining the army in January, but in July of 2006. :)

This means that I'm going to have time to train some more Muay Thai, and buy a training card to our gym for the next 6 months since that makes it more affordable.
_______________________
Our club's prices go:

1 month = 69 €
3 months = 125 €
6 months = 175 €
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
So there's really no idea to get the 1 or 3 months training cards, and that's why I've been waiting for a reply from the army HQ..

I'm so happy I got the reply even this soon! Because now I have time to get in shape for a couple of matches before the army! :) I'm probably going to fight in the 2006 Finnish nationals if I'm lucky and get in shape until that.. I will fight in the heavyweight(+79,4kg/+175lbs) category, and have no chance to get one weightclass under since I weigh in at 102kg/225lbs atm, and I'm decently fit :D if you may..

I'm probably getting my gym-card in the next week or so. I've already been training in our basement with my brother for the last 2 months so I'm ready to start a bit higher up in the training-tempo than you usally start after a break like this..

I'm gonna let you guys know how it goes and what progress I'm doing, considering the 2006 nationals.. :)

Wish me luck! :D

I myself have been on and off in various karate dojos. Being in a military family we really don't stick around long enough to get anywhere but: the experience and knowledge gained was never anything less than helpful.

I can honestly say, after participating in the "dojos" in the US and the dojo here in Japan, I'd much prefer to learn the art in its home country rather than some imitation overseas. The "dojo" in the US never really impressed me because it lacked strictness and well the teachers never really looked too impressive doing what they did. Maybe I just had bad luck I dunno. He made a valid point too, "in combat how often do you get the chance to set yourself up for complex technique and fancy moves?" Not too often. Straight, to the point, functional, I like. Ha ha XD

Currently I'm learning at a dojo in the Zama area where I'm living, an Okinawan (my homeland! yee!) style of Karatedo called uechi-ryu. Great stuff! The sensei more or less smacks the crap out of you to make sure all your stances are right, and works with you and explains in detail the purpose of everything you use (this made me so happy). The stances are actually pretty closed up and defensive (which made more sense than the wide open stances they tought in the US, making yourself vulnerable to the infamous crotch shot). I dunno, this all just seems more practical than the fancy-dancy whoo-hoo stuff I learned in the states.

Plus, the old man is frighteningly fast and powerful when he performs. I'm not talking just kata, you should see the man fight! holy crap! 8th degree black belt in Okinawan Uechi Ryu, this is the guy to learn from, ha ha ha XD

But that's just me and my thoughts on Karatedo. XP

Even if it took more discipline and strength than any martial art, it doesn't make it one? :D Like I don't consider long-distance running a martial art, even if there is major pain-age :D:D j/k, and I know what you meant ;)

I consider martial arts a form of self-defence.
A way to stop yourself getting hurt by other people, by means of hurting/stopping them with little effort.
Parkour is a way of getting from A to B quickly, not a way to defend yourself effectively in any way, though I guess it could prove useful as an escape tactic..
