A friend of mine makes the following observation, with which I have to agree. There were people who took things like food, bottled water and diapers. This is not "looting" but simply survival. There were people who took things like televisions and VCRs. Obviously this is looting. The guy with the beer falls somewhere in between, and probably a lot closer to the "necessities" end of the spectrum. If I had just been through two or three days of living hell and somehow come through alive, you better believe I could go for a few brews or even a bunch. Plus, consider that there was no safe drinking water at that point--sure he could have taken bottled water, but everybody else was taking that too. Beer has calories, a lot of them in fact. No, beer is not exactly a nutritious breakfast, but for a short period of time it beats starvation. Here again, he could have taken a can of Ravioli or a loaf of bread, but everybody else was taking that. By taking beer he perhaps leaves the bottled water and the Ravioli for a pregnant woman and the bread for somebody who doesn't drink beer. Under ordinary circumstances beer is purely a luxury item. I can't really bring myself to condemn the guy in the photo, though. It would have been a lot better if they'd got a picture of somebody stealing a television. None of this, of course, makes any of the pictures any less hilarious, at least to me.  _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |
