Help me fix my cpu/fps spiking problem.
Necissary hardware basics:
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 256mb
512MB DDR RAM
2.2Ghz AMD Athlon 2600+

It occurs.. at random. After logging it for a few days. I've managed to determine that it actually happens.. almost at random, with a tendancy to interrupt games, and other things that are likely to use a lot of system resources. Fps and cpu usage will spike, then drop to minimum, effectively jarring everything for exactly 1 second. This will go on for a few minutes, constantly happening every other second.
I'm running all updated drivers, and my processlist has no relation to it, I've already tried running problem games with minimal cpu usage.

Suggestions welcome. =)

I've found that the single biggest factor in heat-related stuff is the thermal paste on your CPU. Get some new paste, take apart your box, clean ALL the old stuff off the heatsink and CPU, apply a dab of new, and voilĂ , you'll find your temperature dropping sometimes even by 15 or 20 degrees Celsius.

Yup.

Ok.. looks like you're right Kensei. I took the case off, grabbed the nearest room fan and pointed it at the motherboard (in general, it's a pretty big fan).
Sure enough, 40 minutes of jka, with everything I normally have running ontop of that; (msn, wmp, avg, wb, msas)... no cpu spikes. Well, not to say I didn't get any of them at all. They did pop up one or two times, but only for a matter of seconds, rather than a matter of minutes.
So.. it looks like my new setup is working, kinda. I'll be having a look around for a new fan, thanks for the help. :D

I've already said, I've watched that process list like a hawk. It is certainly not anything on there. The problem isn't driver related either. I upgraded my drivers hoping that it was them causing the problem, but they aren't.
Now.. Overheating.. That's more likely.. I'll see what I can do about that, maybe.. run it with the case off for a while and see if anything happens.. ty.

This may sound strange, but I traced a similar problem back to overheating. I would get freezes and CPU spikes when running certain applications (usually games). However, when plotting the freezing against my GFX card and CPU temperatures, I found that it regularly coincided with the lockups.

Might be of some use to you, but of course it could be totally independant.

If you recently upgraded your video drivers, try dropping back a version or two and see if that helps. ATI drivers have been known to do weird things to OpenGL games.

Also check the usual suspects such as overheating, power supply or hard drive going, etc. My dad's old computer had a dysfunctional Norton on it which liked to scan the (empty) floppy drive every so often, and would take up 99% CPU while it did so.

Leave youe Task Manager open with the Processes list tab selected and sorted in descending order by CPU use. Do your stuff and when you see a spike look at the task manager. Look for the program thats eating CPU. Troubleshoot from there.
