Ok, here's the deal. I have a paper I am writing for my anthropology class. Basically I have to ask a question to a group of people. I gotta write this sucker asap so it would be much obliged to get quick responses. Now, the question does not need a long response. Just a quick view point. When answering I need you to state your: Age Gender Ethnicity Country of Origin Here's the question: "What do you think the role of America is to the rest of the world?" I need some valid responses and please do not forget to list your age, gender, ethnicity, and country of origin. And for the love of god try not to turn this into a flame fest. At least let me get my paper done first. _______________ "We keep odd hours...." ----------------------- They Live, We Sleep |

Age: 27 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Honkey Country of Origin: USA America is the world's current superpower and acts like it. It acts in its own best interests because frequently the majority of the rest of the world will benefit from the US doing what it needs to do to thrive and survive. It is utilitarianism at its finest. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |

Age: 15 Gender: M White Country: Born in US, family traces back to Uzbeckestan. I think Americas role is to police the rest of the world. You see it all the time in history, they already police Latin America, and theres the recent invation of Iraq, which was never proven that there was nukes. And they do say history repeats itself. _______________ -Phantom Ex-Master to Threat. Proud owner of Sazabi's 1500th comment! Age: 14 Gender: Male Ethnicity: White Country of origin: England I feel that america are realitivly stuck up, thinking there the 'top dog' of the world today. Sure they can defend their own country from terrorists, ect but do they realy have to get involed in wars half a world away? vietnam for example (although that was quite some time ago, but u get what i mean ![]() edit: perhaps a bit harsh "realtivly stuck up" but i cant really think of something else to give the sameish meaning.. _______________ [proud owner of talions 200th, 700th,1111th coment AND 1400th , DJK's 3001th coment! , saz's 400th coment! liso's 800th coment! Age: 17 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Country of origin: Norway I think the United States' role in the world is much like that of a police force. They seem to be quite efficient in trying to "keep the peace" all over the world and eliminate potential dangers (read: Saddam Hussein). Further on, they have a bad habit of telling other countries what to do, and how to do it. I'm glad I could help. ![]() Edit: OMG, Mic. Age: 33 Gender: Male Ethnicity: White Country: United States The role that the US plays as world leader is one of charity. While a few of the responses below clearly point out the US Government's roles and actions they do not exemplify the role of the people of the United States. The people of the US provide unparralled support to worthy causes around the world. Including their time, money, and skills. Most American's acknowledge our good fortune of just being citizens of a great nation and give back through service to our fellow men and women around the world. good luck on yer paper peace _______________ “Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Age: 16 (17 tomorrow) Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasion Country of origin: England, UK Answer: Well, i've allways seen America as a brother to England. They're allways there for us, and we're allways there for them. Size matters not to us.. nor does our interests. Its out past and our friendship that has kept us together almost as a family. This im sure plays out very well with the rest of the world. America allways acts as like a peacekeeper throughout the world. I could be wrong. Please don't judge me on my opinion. Age: 21 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Country of Origin: Holland My answer to your question: -Since America is the most powerful nation in the world, it is kinda forced in a roll as global policeofficer. Im cool with that, as long as they dont lie about their reasons for going to war. Dont get me wrong tho, they have every right to defend themselves and/or seek vengeance from terrorist attacks. Just be honest (i know politics is not an honest game, but please try) with the rest of the world about it. -Av. This comment was edited by AvaloN on Oct 11 2005 01:05pm. |

Age: 17 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Country of Origin: England, United Kingdom I think America often seems to see itself (and comes across) as being the "ruler of the world" (much as Hardwired said). America frequently seems to disregard the views of everyone else for its own high-handed approach. However, (also as Hardwired mentioned) there is a flip side. Unfortunately, I feel this is being seen less and less often. _______________ Website |

Age: 17 Gender: Male Ethnicity: 1/4 Spanish, 3/4 Latin American Country of Origin: Dominican Republic The role of the USA is that of police of the world, whether they want to or not. It is simply the tag that comes with being the empire of the moment. No matter what they do, they will always be criticized. If they do not get involved, they will be told that it is their job to do so because of their position. If they do, they will usually be told to butt off. It's just both sides of the sour grape. But mainly, their job is to do what they must. ![]() _______________ Owner of Pink Floyd's 480th comment, Darth Sirius's 250th comment, my paddy bro Stig's 225th comment, BDKawika's 200th comment and Jedifire's 100th comment. Age: 22 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasian Country of Origin: Scotland While people may not approve of America's current activities in Iraq, it cannot be denied that they've made major contributions to security in the civilised world, and have been a great ally to nations such as Great Britain and Australia. I believe their role has always been that of a mediator, although it must be said that it hasn't always been appreciated by the involved parties. This comment was edited by  on Oct 09 2005 02:27am. |

Quote: The role America plays to the rest of the world is of course a very complex one. With aid to the starving and less fortunate on one side. And with the desire to act as a policing state on the other. I think the easiest way to sum it up (which of course is making a gross generalisation) is that the US playes older brother to the rest of the world on many occations. Age: 20 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasion Country of Origin: The Netherlands I agree with HW on this one... I don't really have much to add to what he said, only that IMHO America feels superior to other countries. And like HW said, let's not turn this into a flamewar... Age: 26 Gender: Male Ethnicity: Caucasion Country of origin: Sweden The role America plays to the rest of the world is of course a very complex one. With aid to the starving and less fortunate on one side. And with the desire to act as a policing state on the other. I think the easiest way to sum it up (which of course is making a gross generalisation) is that the US playes older brother to the rest of the world on many occations. I would like to stress the point that Ash brought up. Do not turn this into a flamewar. I think the easiest way to ensure that is to limit this to one post per member and only with valid responced to Ash's paper. No responces of any kind to other posts. Thats a suggestion at least. Good luck on your paper Ash.
